Hi all,
Im driving a company truck for Schneider but Id like to personalize it as much as I can. Even though Im dedicated and Im home nightly...Im not in the truck as much as OTR drivers. However, Id still like to be able to personalize it as much as possible. What can be done?
1. I guess Im looking for ways to organize....I guess that isn't really a way to personalize...but in some ways it is too.
2. More to the point...just ways to make it my 'own' in a sense. I saw someone with a POW/MIA curtain and I was thinking how cool it would be to have a MN Twins or Vikings curtain or something. Im from MN, lol.
*Im thinking of buying lugnut covers with amber reflectors
Not sure if I will get a TV or not as I don't plan on using one. I might use the sleeper if I get stuck in the weather, but the rare chance of that happening doesnt merit a TV or fridge / cooler.
Ways to customize?

Something that I've noticed with the company I work for is that there are very, very few drivers who keep certain parts of their truck polished (wheels, fuel tanks, etc). Most of them keep it fairly clean, but not polished. There's a couple guys who like to be able to see themselves in their wheels. Those trucks stand out, and I can tell from a mile away who's truck it is. Simple concept, definitely a lot of work, but IMO as a fleet truck, something like that definitely sets it apart. And there's a certain amount of pride to be had when you can stand back and admire your work. Sure, there's a lot of people who don't even notice that kind of thing, but there's still plenty that do notice.

I personaly can appreciate those guys who drive for the mega carriers inc, that go the extra mile in keeping their rigs spotless. I feel that a guy who washes and polishes a company truck should get some kind of bonus, or prefered treatment or reward from said company. Bob Schneider wont pay for his trucks to be run through the Blue beacon, yet he worries about his drivers portraying a "cowboy" image and insists his driver dress appropriately, all the while his skanky dirty trucks and trailers run all accross the United States. Geezus, at least wash them once a year, as opposed to never.
No slam on Bob, I have met the man and respect him, but dirty pumkins are just plain fuggly.
As an aside here, say what ya want about TMC, but you GOTTA have respect for an outfit that REQUIRES their drivers to get trucks washed. And weekly at that!
ziggystyles,
The purple Viqueens curtain idea is just not right. SNC is based outta Green Bay Wisconsin, TITLETOWN USA. LOL
Just ribbing ya hand, LOL -
i drive a company truck and i got mine all customized to joy n back
starting off inside i got nonskid mats cut to fit the floor area so ive basicly got new floors. got everythign organized and where i want it. i got a custom shifter boot (well not custom its the blue flame one) chrome AC vent, cell phone holder, chrome door locks. the 'truckers arm rest' in the drivers door/window thingy. got blue flame skull seat covers. a license palte in teh windshiled near the prepass becon that reads 'if u value your life as much as i value my truck. dont mess with it". got a poster sized WWII warbirds calender on the back wall. optimus prime poster on the ceiling. trans siberian orchestra poster at the foot of my bunk. dolphin nite light for getting up in the middle of the night.
on the outside i got sharks teeth on the grill w/ bungies because i gotta be able to take it off b4 i go to a terminal hehehehe. dunno if its ok or not.. but not takin any chances near terminals. i got blue bulbs in my work lamps so # night my trailer lights up blue in the front. looks decent. on the drivers door in vynil lettering i got 'Hightower' (my cb handel) in a neat font and design thanks to the fella # the iowa 80 truckstop for that one.
my name on teh door really seals the deal for me. i open the door and i see my name and its like 'its my truck.'
'my trucking photos' shows most of, if not all of the customizations ive done.
side note: the sharks teeth on the grill... safty feature. since i put it on fewer ppl cut me off. AND sw a deer trying to cross the road. car goes by. didnt phase it. big rig goes by. didnt phase it. looked at me comin and took off running back into the woods. so im goin with 'safty feature' on teh sharks teeth -
As far as dress code, I don't think we have one, other than work boots (not even sure if that is required) and jeans, no shorts.
Im also on a dedicated run in the boonies so I never see a OC or anything. I need to go by a local car wash this weekend and take a look...I think their bays are big enough for me to bring the tractor through.
Another thing I have seen a couple of Schneider drivers do is paint the lettering on the tires Orange...probably insanely time consuming, but it looks pretty shnazzy.
I guess right now Im keeping from spending anything on the truck for goodies...mainly because Im not sure if my particular position is permanent. Its a dream job, but Im filling in for a guardsman who might come back and take their spot.
The guy I trained with for a few days on this route, he had a custom cover for his eaton fuller shifter...would like to get something for that if possible.
Transformers poster?! You are my hero! Never thought of that! Im a big fan of the transformers. lol. Same thing with the Orchestra too.
I was thinking Id like to do something with the grill, but with the centuries design...can't really do anything there as far as I can tell. Maybe get some orange lights...hmmm. Which reminds me of maybe getting some orange lights for the cab and sleeper.
I was thinking of putting my name on the door too. I have a little plastic door name tag from when I was a teacher last year and swiped it when they didn't bring me back. Of course, then someone can call in and say "....so and so cut me off blah blah blah" lol.
I do need to get a cell phone holder, that would really come in handy.
How about wiring stuff as far as satellite radios and such? Mine is rather tacky at the moment as I havent spent much time figuring how to hide the wires. I have the radio (XM) attached to a double stick thing by the pull out brakes, has three wires going from it. One to the power (cig adapter), another to the cassette adapter, another goes up to the overhead cubbies where the 233 feet of antenna wire is pushed into...and the end of that wire goes out the triangle window of the door to the antenna mounted on the mirror mount. Not really a fan of the wires sticking up from the radio to the cubbies.
Do they make different brake buttons other than the standard yellow and orage shaped ones? I thought I saw something different one time. -
check my truckin photos on here. you will see how i got my sirus hooked up. i got a duel window so it goes up the center support w/ blak duckt tape, thru the sunvisor out the door to the trucking antenna.
the shifter boot is $40.. pricy but cool.
the grill/bugscreen is custom made for your truck http://www.truckersmall.net/bugscreens.html (sorry if im not allowed to post link. if it gets deleted ill PM you)
they custom made mine for my international.
the vynil lettering ont he door was $2.. roehl allows this because its easily removeable. and as long as it isnt offensive they are cool with it. i would think your company would feel the same way. check thou.
as for having your handel on the door. a) 99% of dispatch has no clue who you are. and b) if they call in on ya.. they are gonna say your truck number or trailer number and if ur company gives a rats ### at all they can find out who was on that highway at that particular time and track you down anyway. so no real gain by hiding it tbh.
forgot to mention too i got Firefly and Serenity logos in my windows of the sleeper and a custom designed poster (designed by me) of Serenity and Jayne Cobb next to my bunk too.
-
What you forgot to mention was where you got the TSO poster. I'm heading to their concert Saturday, then heading off Sunday to join you at Roehl (well, the school first, obviously).
-
got it at the concert. the 3d poster. $20
PS: using superglue to put it up.. bad idea. it riped the back a bit... doesnt look too bad where i put it now. but jsut an fyi -
I just got home from the TSO concert... I decided to go with a shirt.
