So I recently finished driving school and throughout the entire process I got allot of different advice from many instructors and state examiners. The bulk of the feedback was about watching my mirrors during turns. One instructor told me to watch only the bottom turn side mirror from start to finish, turn and adjust and don't hit the curb. Another told me to scan left, right and ahead at least three times during every turn. Others told me to just make sure I'm clear and get back to looking at the road in front of me. On test day I got a full 8 points deducted on turns because the examiner said that I was looking all over the place and he even told me that I don't need to be looking forward any more than 10% of the turn because nobody hits something in front of them, it's usually from the side??? Anyway, I passed but I want to get some advice from the group here on how you navigate turns and how you watch your mirrors.

Well… I’ve been driving 16 years and never had an accident. Here’s my take.
Keep in mind every turn is different, but I look forward 90% of the turn. I look in mirror quickly to make sure no car is trying to cut in. I look in mirror to make sure tandems clear curb/pole/car, etc. That’s it. Rest of the time forward. In tight corners you need to look at oncoming traffic if you need that lane, etc.

For simple turns, I just look forward. Tight turns, I use all 3 mirrors for different reasons. Use whichever mirror however long you want that allows you to not hit things is the real world rule of thumb. Try to get as close to the white line as possible without touching it when you get out on the road to practice turning safely

As you get experienced you’ll know when you have plenty of trailer clearance in turn and when you don’t . This will help you determine where more attention is needed . Just yesterday I was making a left turn from a 1 turning lane road had I not glanced to my right I would’ve smoked a car turning left from the straight through lane.. in Toronto Canada it common to have a 4 wheeler try to beat a truck in the turn like that.

When you approach an intersection, you should scan the intersection to see how big it is, how many lanes etc and how much room you'll need to make the turn. Of course, you'll need to watch your trailer tandems (in the mirror) to be sure they clear.

I’ve since noticed that for buttonhooking a right I swing my front end around when my trailer wheels reach that point.
Now, I drive a single screw so course changes during a turn are in fact a possibility, so I’ll take a peek or three back there to see if the trailer wheels will clear everything while looking to dodge the oncoming trafgic coming out.Rideandrepair Thanks this.
