If you are referring to routing from IL to PA, then US-30 through Fort Wayne is an alternative to I-80, without tolls.
However, it's not a good alternative. Every time you slow down for a town, stop at a light, or get delayed for traffic blocking the road while they try to make a turn, it burns into your time, uses extra fuel, puts extra wear on your brakes and clutch, and adds lots more potential for tickets due to missing or poorly placed signage. In the end, the toll road is a good idea.
Some companies simply do not understand the concept of Real Cost. Real Cost is not just your straight-up expenses. It's also the money you could have been making with that extra time you wasted. It's the money you would have made while you were in the shop for service due to excessive wear on secondary roads.
Simple costs like fuel and basic driving time nearly justify taking I-80 instead of US-30.
Real Costs including potential income lost makes the toll cost of I-80 meaningless.Cattleman84, Gearjammin' Penguin, rabbiporkchop and 2 others Thank this. -
I once cut through the woods in Ohio from south to north and I had a super 100+ mph truck with huge Detroit and so on.
I finally dragged onto a 6th ridge staring at the sky crawled onto the intersection with the engine showing heat trouble and axle temps out of range and transmission refusing to cool etc.
I managed Toledo that night. It was essentially a DOT exam for that poor truck that night. If I chose to run 80 straight across to Toledo instead of trying to be funny and use WVA instead to KY.. (Talk about out of route back then...)
By the time the shop bill was paid and all the problems put right with fluids etc it was about three times what a straight run across 80 would have done.
That was the only time I have ever done that.
I do not use the toll road always every time. If the load is relatively light, there are certain routes like you described that will get the job done., But you have to absolutely watch the towns and the local signs etc. Railroad crossings in particular. Hang a trailer across one at a light. BOOM TICKET in the amount exceeding that pitiful toll cost.Farmerbob1 Thanks this. -

If your company doesn't want to pay tolls then they sukk. My opinion of course. Seek employment elsewhere. Let them struggle thru the idiots that need to be there. Good lukk and be safe.

If you wanted Chicago to NYC on I-80 etc the full run it's going to cost you plenty, particularly on the PA Pike, GWB (Which is like 106 dollars northbound) and so on.
Im not current on Maryland tolls. The rates I will say for big trucks or cars is 30 years ago. There is no point.
Even I-66 is a toll road in a way during certain hours of a given workday now I understand.
They are contemplating tolling cars based on your GPS and usage daily in certain areas of the USA. It would not be difficult to see money money money go bye bye bye on what was formerly a free route like US 30.Farmerbob1 Thanks this. -
I crossed it on a bike before.x1Heavy Thanks this. -
Avoiding the PA turnpike is possible in some situations without a lot of hassle. But if you're coming from Jersey, there is no way to avoid tolls altogether when westbound. All depends on your points A and B how to traverse PA without giving them any more money then you need to. Take advantage of free I-80 (Pennsylvania) while you can before they finally decide to go ahead and toll it too. They've talked about it. At some point they will and chaos will ensue on the pig trails that cris-cross the state when that does happen.
