Ugh. I've been here twice and both times I've managed to get an 8-10hour break out of it. This is right off the NJ Turnpike at exit 12. Once you pass the toll booths keep going straight and it's the very first stop light. One good thing about this is if you miss that light, there are signs directing you to a truck-friendly route to turn around.

Now with that in mind, once you get here most people park along the entry road and walk to the guardhouse to check in. Then you'll see them walking back to their truck shortly after. Why? Because Wakefern/ShopRite requires the license plate # on your tractor AND trailer when you check in. Oh and don't forget your ID, you'll need that too. Plus you get your picture taken.

Once you get assigned to a dock then you get to walk into the receiving office. Then over to the lumper office. Now if you're lucky they'll unload you fast and get your paperwork done fast. If not, they'll unload you fast then keep you locked to the dock for the next 5 hours doing your paperwork.

In my case I was even more unlucky, they lost my paperwork so I had to wait even longer for them to find it, give up, and make photocopies of what they had. I got there at 0345. I didn't leave until close to 1300. I'd like to say this was an isolated incident but no, it's happened to me the other time I was here, too.

So if you have a delivery. Bring a lunch. Bring some drinks. Bring some entertainment and bring your pillow because you'll be here awhile.

All Wakefern/Shop Rites are the same about requiring the lic plate numbers and drivers lic. It's sad that I have my truck and trailer plates memorized...along with the last 8 of both their VINs and the engines serial number. LOL. I would say you pretty much have a normal grocery warehouse visit with the exception of losing the paperwork.

I've only been to wakefern at exit 10 off the NJTP.... went there every tuesday for a year and a half... NEVER more than 2.5 hours.. of course, what nobody talks about when they are there for hours, is what they were delivering... what did the lumpers have to do to sort the load and how did they have to break down the load?? i'm not supporting lumpers, i hate paying lumpers, so i dont... i unload my own truck everywhere i possibly can, and charge back the broker, and i collect what they were going to pay the broker... now, that being said, did you have 24 pallets with 50 different products? requiring the 24 pallets being broken down into 50 pallets??? or did you have 1 product on 24 pallets, requiring no breakdown, just needed to be pulled onto the dock?? if you dont like waiting, do it yourself

Ok, to me this is a big part of the problem. Unloading the truck is one task. Breaking down pallets is an entirely different job! Why should I have to wait for that job to be done? Unload me then take as long as you like to do whatever you want with what is unloaded!

I agree, when you have a single product that has to be broken down, count the quantity, send the driver on his way, and then break it down, but as I said before, when you've got 50 products on 25 pallets, they have to break it down before they can verify quantity.

Been there a few times. Trick is unload it yourself. Once unloaded let them know and get right back on the electric lift truck and take it back to your trailer/load. Seems they get right down to count when you are holding their lift truck hostage then play it off like an idiot like you thought you had to wait for them to verify the count/refuse product and just wante to be sure you would be there to reload any refused. Works for me normally out in an hour and a half. Hour to unload, 30 mins to verify/sign off on paperwork

Most Wakefern places are decent. In and out and some have overnight parking. I've never had a bad time at Wakefern. I'm surprised to hear this.

Wakefern is no different than any other grocery warehouse. They want you to do they're work for them, or hire a way over priced lumper. They don't care what so ever about a driver or what they need to do next.
