    What do all the letters/numbers stand for in Volvo's model number? I get that the 730/780 is midroof/raised roof. What about everything before that? I'm sure it means something, just never have understood it.

    And... does the 730 have a single bunk option? All that I see are double.

    Just curious, thanks !

    730 does have a single bunk option. All the extra numbers in the model don't mean anything to me, but I suspect maybe there is a magic interweb site that can explain it

    Yeah, I've looked at that... and it does explain 2/3 of it for me. Maybe I'm missing something? The letters VNL etc are described well. The last 3 numbers are described.

    I guess my question should be more specific. What does 42T, 62T, 86T stand for ( the numbers and letter in the center of the model number)? Am I missing that on that website?

    VNL42T VNM42T VNL42 VNM42
    VNL64T VNM64T VNL64 VNM64

    V= Volvo
    N= North America
    L= Long Hood
    M= Medium Hood
    T= Tractor
    AH= Auto Hauler
    HD= Heavy Duty
    X= Xtreme (Heavy Haul, Oversize)

    The first number after the model designation represents the number of wheels (hubs) per vehicle.

    The second number represents the number of wheels (hubs) that drive the vehicle.

    Each model designation also carries a suffix, which identifies the cab type.

    VNL is used today, not on 880's.

    The official designation of the 880 was;

    VNT88064T, there was no " L" in its designation.
