Greetings. I have determined that i need to replace the air compressor on my '04 VNL630, d12d 465. This truck has a single cylinder air compressor. My other '06 VNL630 12d 435 has a twin cylinder air compressor. My questions are:
1. Can I replace the single cylinder compressor with a twin cylinder unit?
2. Would I benefit replacing it with a twin?
3.Should I just replace with a single as original equipped?
4. Are there any tips you can offer on removal and replacing the unit?
I'v done several of these on Cats but not on Volvo's. Thanks, any help is appreciated.

My 05 Volvo D12 has a single cylinder compressor too. You can use either or and the difference I believe is just because of a two cylinder pump can pump faster. Could be totally wrong otherwise and just be what brand Volvo decided to go with when building the engine at the same time. My 2250 Cummins ISX uses the same single cylinder pump but only painted red!
silver dollar Thanks this. -
You can run the twin cylinder compressor. I've done it many times. Everything bolts up exactly the same. The oil feed line is a little longer, but will still connect. Just make sure it doesn't rub against anything. It will build air twice as fast as the single cylinder. The only difference as I was told by the Volvo dealer was weight savings for better fuel mileage. I don't see the logic as the difference in weight between the two is marginal compared to say......running down the road with a full fuel tank or one half empty.
silver dollar, Volvo8873 and Socal Xpress Thank this. -
Thanks for the help. This is what I was thinking. I've already removed the old unit, and waiting on FedEx to deliver the new unit. Thanks Guys
