Kenworth T680 or Volvo 780?
I've driven both of these trucks, but am searching the forums myself for reviews before I choose which one to buy. Each driver has different reasons he wants this truck or that truck. Of course, when it comes down to the nitty gritty, we all talk about cost of ownership, comparing dependability, fuel mileage, etc... My Dad is about to retire and is interested in buying a truck and traveling with me under the terms that we can pick our own loads and gallivant the country a bit. In spite what many say, this is a real possibility for owner operators, especially if you are willing to run for an average of $1.80/ mile, and there is plenty of freight going every which way if you are okay with making this amount. At 250,000 miles per year between two drivers, it isn't a bad income at this rate, but one important factor remains, THE TRUCK.
In the market for a truck, MY first concern was comfort and Cab design, as this will be a small space that i am sharing with another driver. So for me, it came down to two trucks, for which have a design that meets my standards of comfort on the road. The Volvo 780 Won first pick for comfort. The dinette table makes many of the things we do in our job very convenient. It is literally the best office/ dining area combo you could hope for. You could easily accommodate sit-ups with the floor area, and do jumping jacks with the rest of the interior space. The floor goes all the way back to the rear of the cab, which opens up many possibilities that other trucks do not offer as well. It is simply the best Cab design I have ever seen IMO.
My next favored Cab design of the California Legal trucks (post 2011) is the Kenworth T680. It also has an interesting layout, and makes use of a very accessible office table, much better for keeping a laptop at hands reach with room for a computer mouse and keyboard (something freightliner has always failed at with every single model). The T680 also accommodates up to a 32" flat screen TV if you push the limit, with 30" being a very practical fit. The Kenworth wins in that it has the best possible entertainment center layout.
Of these two trucks that I like, I've only driven the T680 long enough to comment on maintenance and dependability. The paccar engine looks built to last, and I do believe that kenworth has about the best warranty of all the trucks if you were to buy something newer. I've only been reading about Volvos recently, and while I really wanted to hear nothing but good things about them, comparing the ratio of positive vs negative reviews of these two models I like, the Kenworth has definitely won the bias of truckers report, and quite probably for real reasons.
My final option is to choose solely on cost of ownership, and focus much less on the comforts of the Cab design. No doubt, from reading many forums here, if the majority rules, then a Cascadia with a Detroit is probably the winner. I could rip everything out of the Cab and engineer my own Cab from the ground up. This would ultimately be my favorite option, but weary about the time and money I'll invest on building my Cab while needing to make a living by making the wheels roll (but it wouldn't cost much to build). Ultimately, what I really want to do is lower the bunk and take the bottom bed out completely. The bottom of the bunk would lower to a point where it rests on a desk, where my laptop can remain tucked away. I could have a fold away chair and tables with the floor area completely open. There is plenty of interior room in any condo truck to literally build the equivalent of an 8' truck camper. If you wanted to get really creative, you could even have one of those camper van shower/ toilet combos, a desk, some chairs, fridge, microwave, etc.. You could easily have all of this with just a standard sized condo if you got creative about it. If I had the times and money, I'd choose this options hands down, but in reality, I'm so pleased with the Volvo 780 Cab that it is really near just one step down from what i would create for myself.
In the end, just looking for direction here. What are your preferences and why? Which would you choose and why? Any information that could help me in choosing the vessel I practically live in would be appreciated.
Volvo 780 or Kenworth T680 cab designs, which would you choose and why?

I would choose the Volvo based on the fact that I can make it talk 65 miles with an antenna system that I designed specifically for the Volvo as opposed to 45 miles with the Kenworth

Do not forget to look at the weight off both trucks.

I would take the 780 as it has bigger Side Box Entry Doors so you can access or store alot of big items underneath vs. the small Side Box Doors of the Cascadia and KW.
I don't see how anyone can even fit a small toolbox in those tiny Side Compartments.
I don't see any benefit to the KW680 Sleeper Design, for it being a 76" Sleeper it seems very small and not thought out compared to the 780's 77" Sleeper interior.
I wouldn't even waste my time or money with a Crap-cadia.
As a Owner of a 1st Gen Volvo VNL770, (same sleeper cab and dimensions as a 780) , there's no way I could ever fit all my belongings and toolbox into a KW T680.
I haven't read many good reports about the PACCAR MX-13 engine, alot of problems with the After Treatment System.rabbiporkchop and Bakerman Thank this. -
The guy I gave that antenna to had a bigger amplifier than mine and he made an 85 mile contact with it the first day he had it on his truck but that was to a base station someplace 85 miles up the road somewhere in Pennsylvania -
David Schwarz - So which one did you decide on?
