Yes it is true. I worked for them for almost 8 years out of Roanoke Va. I quit in July 2012 and still kept in touch with a couple drivers. Central bought them out in last part of 2013 and from what I was told about all of Vitran employees got laid off or quit. But I don't know about the other parts.
One person I talk to out of Cleveland said that if you out of a hub terminal you are doing pretty good. -
Vitran seems to be doing pretty steady up here in Canada.

Yeah just the US LTL side was bought out. They wanted to be strong in the US as Canada but just couldn't do it. Whether it was bad timing with the economy or just poor management.

As my former manager at Central once told me, the further south you get, the worse the company gets. This became obvious when I transfered to Florida.popcorn169 Thanks this. -
When it was called PJAX it wasn't that bad out of my terminal but when VITRAN took over it started going down hill. They tried but in the end said the economy took a toll on them. That I can believe but then they started trying to recover by hiring some big shot from FED-EX and then it really went do
wn hill. Supposedly someone from CON-WAY was brought in. Then it was finally bought by Central and from the drivers down this way it sucks now. -
I drove for Vitran Express through a temporary company for less than one month in San Leandro, California almost to the day they closed the doors there. I was a replacement for employees that had quit. It was pitiful. Very demanding. They constantly tried to make me run illegal. The trucks were terrible, most of the trailers were trash and they had virtually no proper tools to work with. I did notice a few of the trailers said PJAX. The terminal looked like a wrecking yard for trucks and trailers. Even the dollies were not properly maintained. I was always running late and a lot of the commodities were not the correct items, or the amounts were wrong. At the very end, I had to refuse to work for them. The last day I worked for them, I was making a LTL delivery and got a call telling me to return to the terminal after the delivery because the truck I was driving was just sold. A dispatcher I had there sent me to some truly improper delivery locations for the rigs I was driving. The short time I was there, bad management was constantly obvious. Not a good experience.

Shaggy Thanks this. -
Interesting post's . PJAX trailers can still be sighted around Pittsburgh, Central Transport outta Mckees Rocks,PA ( Pittsburgh ) has the worst terminal, I have ever seen. That terminal makes the scalehouse at a landfill a penthouse. Every interaction with a CT driver was positive. I really don't understand how they are in business. Junk everything, ohwell, made a few positive interactions.
