Getting my numbers and logo done on my truck in a couple days and just wondering. Do you put the full VIN number on there, or just the last 6 to 9 digits? I looked it up in the regs and it doesn't seem to specify. I've seen all different ones out there, and some put 6 and some 9 digits. The only reason I ask is because a company I worked for a few years ago only had 6 digits. and some states don't think that's enough like Colorado. I would frequently get pulled into the scale house and they used that as an excuse saying that I didn't have enough of the VIN number showing. Wasn't ever sure if that was a BS excuse or if it was legitimate.

There is no FMCSA reg requiring the vin on any interstate truck. That being said, having the last eight of the vin on the right side of the truck could keep you from getting pulled in in Colorado.

KB3MMX Thanks this.

I know when I call Freightliner they always ask for my last six only. Maybe you can put eight on there just to be sure. Even though it isn't required it will save some time at a weigh station for those who like it to be there.

Not required by Feds, but most companies put at least 9 on there to keep state DOT's happy. My company has the full VIN on the passenger side sleeper in slightly smaller font than the size used for their logo, name and DOT number which are on the doors.

Personally I have 8 digits of vin on side of truck next to MC/DOT numbers

Some states, like Colorado use the last 8 for checking the truck in the states registration system.
TIMPTE 527 Thanks this. -
Colorado and Kentucky were the only two who acted as if everyone needed it. I had a driver who got a ticket in Colorado for it a few years back, we told the state to stick it up their butts, it is a foreign truck and haven't heard a word about it since.
If they pull you in, then they pull you in, there is no requirement to have it. -
True, no requirement to have the VIN displayed. Have had Colorado DOT say Make a readable sign and put in window. Then they will just roll you. Otherwise, stop and bring in registration.
