Hello Truckers report members. I am liking the new look of the forum, blue on white.
Anyway, does anyone know where I can check VINs with Freightliner to see if they've done any work on a couple trucks I'm looking at? I called some locations, no help but Im wondering if theres a central place online or like an online search where this can be done. I read this was possible but have no other info on it. Thank you.

Let me know when you find out. I wish I had my trucks service records.
-
Every dealer can look up the records of the truck through the vin, but some who I dealt with in this area refused, they said it could not be done because they were too lazy to do it. I refuse to buy parts and service from them no matter how much I need them.
You can also get the original order and spec sheet. -
What really stands out is that they are ex-Prime trucks and when I talk to Prime's sales department about their own trucks they are selling, they do have service records for their trucks. What do you think is going on? -
Prime has the service records because Prime did the work. I have done work on my truck and could give you all the records for every little thing I did. A dealership couldn't tell you a thing I have done because I don't tell them or get any work done at a dealer.

I was at a Freightliner in Iowa and the service writer said my truck had been there before when he ran my VIN. I asked what it was in there for. Was just a door handle needed tightening. Funny thing is,.. the same door handle is currently loose. LOL
Not sure if they can look up all dealer records. But,.. if the truck was ever at that particular dealer for repairs, they will have a record of it. Warranty or not.
Hurstbullhaulerswife Thanks this. -
The dealership might not have access to the complete service history of a truck unless the service was done at that dealership, or an affiliated one. What they should have access to, via the manufacturer, is if there were any warranty claims. So, even if the service was performed by an in-house shop, any warranty claims would have been processed through the manufacturer. The same applies to the engine (and I assume the transmission and rear ends). When I bought my truck I got a signed release from the current owner which I forwarded to Freightliner and Detroit to release all service and warranty information to me. It was important enough for me that I passed on one truck because I couldn't get the info and another one because of what I found out from Detroit. I wouldn't buy a truck, especially if it has fairly high mileage, without going through that step.
If you end up buying a truck from a dealer (which I did) you may want to get the warranty searches done at a different dealer (which I did) just to be sure they're being completely honest. -
Not4hire explained how it works very well.
not4hire Thanks this. -
Thanks, that's what I'm doing right now is asking for a warranty search at different dealers and shops. But basically there is no central system, even for dealerships to pull up warranty work? I was thinking that you could just call the manufacturer and have them run the VIN. -
Some GOOD INFO for anyone looking at Prime trucks through them or through a dealer and includes warranty claim stuff:
I was told by Prime that they can and will provide service records for their trucks, even if its not trucks they are selling themselves. The current owner has to request them so if you're talking to a dealer, ask them to request the records from Prime. And all warranty claims and work should be on those service records.
Thanks everyone for the help so far.
