So has anyone been able to replace just the actuator and not replace the turbo?

I replaced the original turbo at 730k and currently sit at 1.11 million. Roughly 382k on the 2nd turbo and actuator. I only idle below 20 degrees and high humidity or heat situations.

I already purchase a rebuilt turbo and found a company in Illinois that rebuilds the actuator. Paid 799 with next day air and 150 core charge.

So would it be better to swap out both and be done with it?

What are the symptoms??? And yes you can replace actuator by itself but you will need Volvo software to calibrate it and to reset learned data. It’s about 1 to 1.5 hour of labor just for actuator and 4 hours for the whole turbo replacement.

Well its throwing the code mid128 pid27 fmi7
On start up it will smoke whenever you depress the petal. Down on power and mpg. Also before this the engine brake I would see 20 to 26psi now only see 4psi or less. Also will not boost over 28psi. I would regularly see 30 to 32psi.

SPN 641 FMI 7. Yeah it’s VGT actuator having hard time doing it’s job, it register spikes or high value in VGT motor effort during start up and or during driving. I experienced that on my truck and end up replacing whole turbo since it’s usually vanes inside the turbo giving VGT hard time. Easy to test when you remove actuator by hand doing a full stroke test back and forth couple times.

    Socal Xpress Thanks this.

Make sure you bought right turbo. D13 used couple different turbos for different EPA regulation.

So yes you can replace actuator only as long as the turbo is not seized that being said the company that you found out of illinois i would not use them have had bad experience with them in the past, there is a company in minokaa called r s turbo that they will do rebuilts on turbo and believe actuators as well that one is pretty good.

Should have been boosting close to the third notch, they are 15 psi gradients. Stock.

Yes the actuator is about $750 and is pretty easy to change. Maybe 45mins.

You do need to get it on the laptop in calibrate the range though to work correctly.

To find out if it is seized, you can remove the actuator and you will see the arm it drives to test.
I think there used to be a video on YouTube that will walk you through it...

**However, given the price of the turbo you can get rebuilt .. that sounds like a much better option getting it freshened.

had this code today, the mechanics removed turbo and VGT and both were good. They said it had to be re calibrated. DO you think I should still change both?

Prob just change actuator don’t really need to change turbo.
