SWIFT has their own CDL training school they also have a vet program that they will wave your schooling they also if you drive for them for a year they reimburse your school fee they take out $75.00 a week for your school then after a year they reimburse you for school so if you give them your year in the end your schooling is free other wise it is or will cost you $3,900 for the schooling.

I will be happy to go to US Xpress or Crete where they start vets out 9 cents more per mile than Swift or any other "vet program". These are the only 2 van fleets, that I have seen so far, that have an actual pay incentive (starting you at a higher pay) benefit for veterans. Both start you at their 2 year mark on their pay scales with an option to utilize your GI Bill money (up to 1265/month extra) for up to 2 years as you get your experience.

Now there are multiple companies out there that are approved through the VA for their apprenticeship so vets can get extra money using their GI bill, but not many that offer pay incentives right off of the bat for company pay.

There are plenty of driving schools around this nation (not the huge fleet schools) that are approved through the VA to use the GI Bill to obtain the license so you DON'T have to contract yourself out for ANY period of time!

That swift program that you just described 95R2C, is nothing more than their NORMAL "no experience" school that they offer for EVERYONE, not just vets! That is per their recruiting department. They pay for the school, you sign a 1 year contract, you PAY THEM per week for the school (to assure you don't just fly away with that new CDL) and than get it payed back in INSTALLMENTS after that one year mark. Sounds like Swift trying to mask their normal student plan just to attract veterans in to their fleet!

Please allow this Vet to help you all.

Stay away from Swift and Knight. These are 2 of the 5 worst companies in America. You will be sorry if you allow them to spew their propaganda. Schneider is not perfect, by any means, but they do seem to have better management than there was when I was with their tanker company (SNBC) in the late 1990's. Roehl is not a bad starter company either.

As far as the flatbed carriers are concerned, the best option is: Maverick

To their credit, Maverick does a lot of training for new and inexperienced open deck drivers. TMC continues to have serious management problems. Melton (the kings of tarping everything) will change driver pay every time the wind changes direction (or so it seems).

If the Crete/Shaffer/Hunt group does participate in the program, you will have to deal with the insane people in their Safety Department. I was with Hunt and Crete, I know. It is like dealing with Adolf Hitler and the Nazi SS, especially with Hunt (flatbed).

Thanks for the info, I will be using this as well. So there are management issues with Crete? I mean the extra 9 CPM is fine, but if there are management issues to where the miles are not going to come, than maybe SNI would look better. I also am looking at hitting the L/P program possibly after a year or so of experience.

Contact A.N. Webber out of Kankakee, IL. Show them your DD 214 with an honorable discharge and they'll train you and will hire you at the experienced pay rate which would be 35 or 38 cpm depending on whether you go OTR or regional.
