Vanguard is a Chinese trailer assembled in a thrice-bankrupt factory in Monon Indiana.
Dave_in_AZ, Derailed and gpsman Thank this. -
I have a vanguard 53' reefer and it is working decent. I bought it off my boss and he bought it when I was a company driver and I was the only one to ever pull it, all I had to do was take over the payments and it is now mine. That being said - I would not buy another one. The quality is just not the same as a Utility or a GD. Spend the extra money.

Utility if I had to pick between the two. Great Dane would be my first choice tho

VANGUARD is sort of the early KIA version of trailers , they do the job just not the quality in them of UTILITY or GREAT DANE

I have never had to work on a vanguard bit have had to spot them in docks and was not impressed with the quality. Dome have dump valves that'll walk the trailer away from the dock and another brand new trailer the release valve wouldn't work to get trailer to move. Also a guy I use to work with worked for a trailer rental joint that sold new vanguards and most of them required repairs before being delivered to customers should give you an idea of quality control. The utility is one of the better vans made from my experience. We had a lot of Stoughton trailers and they where very good a little heavy but they where speced heavier than normal vans because of the freight that was hauled on them auto batteries and lead hogs

Our company has utility, wabash, Great Dane and vanguard reefer trailers. Personally the wabash is junk and Great Dane is good quality but way too heavy. With the Great Dane and my Pete 387 I can haul 44,000. With the utility 45,500 with full tanks of fuel. Vanguard 45,000 but the insulation on a vanguard is way better than utility. The reefer consumes less fuel they did a test in Minnesota with utility and vanguard to see which one had better insulation and vanguard did better. Utility has an r 3000 factor in insulation and vanguard has an r 8000 factor more than double the utility. They would have better quality than utility when their refrigerated intermodals keep product safe around the world with long travel times. They Are a couple hundred pounds heavier than utility but their walls frame landing Gear front integral structure is way stronger than a utility. Personally utility is exactly like a wabash same quality and weight, utility favors wabash as well when u call them and ask their opinion. I'm looking into a 2016 vanguard cool globe R8000 with a theme king precedent s600. The guys selling vanguard have one man who worked for utility for 15 years and I met the man at utility and vanguard and asked him what he thinks about the two brands because at utility he said it's not worth buying utility new he told us it's just not that great quality. He said at utility you think the world of reefers revolves around you but really the world revolves around vanguard which truly is all over the world. Utility walls puff up too quick and can't stamd extreme temperatures I know because I run california to alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba Canada where temp goes from california 100 degrees fahrenheit to -40 in Canada. Utility just can't perform or stay as solid as a vanguard. New vanguard from the person I know because he works in the Moreno Valley plant in california for vanguard is $71000 owner operator spec. At the dealer its $73900 and a utility at the dealer is $73000. Vanguard is better.
JJ 501 and Dave_in_AZ Thank this. -

I worked on them, and pulled them. You couldn't give me a Vanguard. Trouble closing the doors all the time. Hyundai some of the factory parts are really expensive. I was doing a insurance repair and ordered a factory wing plate for the dollies. 3 months and over a grand because it had the H stamped in it. I convinced the insurance company to let me change both to generics so they match. About 600.00 total.
Utility and Stoughton are my personal choice. A 10 year old stoughton is better than a new Vanguard.Dave_in_AZ Thanks this.
