I was wondering if anyone out can share their experience driving for USPS. I'm looking into finding a job with them after I get out of the Army. If anyone has transitioned from the military to the USPS I would also appreciate info on that and how it counts towards retirement, job experience etc.
Thanks

This might help. Google: USPS Tractor Trailer Driver
Veterans are given preference in hiring . If you are interested in driving jobs other than tractor trailer click the USPS logo on the top left of the link
There is a "Master the Postal Exams " by Arco that helps with the exams required for driver applicants . It costs $85 but if you go to Amazon.com and put it in search you can buy a used one for much less .
One negative thing about USPS is they don't upgrade their fleet very often (every 15-20 years ? ) . I remember in the early 90's I used to see USPS drivers piking up trailers in Atlanta railyards . When I saw the old Mack cabovers being replaced with conventional tractors I asked a driver about it .
He said USPS heard they would be required to have a/c in tractors the following year so they were buying tractors before that was required to avoid the extra cost of a/c .Last edited by a moderator: Sep 2, 2008

suposuvly your local public library should have the study book for the 473/473-c, and the 460 not sure if the last one is the right number but its something like that there is a link on the USPS web site and they say that all the company's charging to "help you study" for the exam are just a scam the book they send you is like $20 also look into where your planing to live since there are not that many postal jobs since they are encouraging there employs to take early retirement without receiving a early retirement bonus

I've delivered to many of the major USPS facilities for years. I never thought to ask what they had to do to get their jobs. Hum.....
Thanks for the posts guys. I'm gonna have something to look forward to next time I'm on their yard besides getting off their yard. -
are all truckers who drive for usps a part of the teamsters union or are most independent or with contract companies?

I have a friend who works as a rural route carrier and every time management counts their mail(like piece work they get paid for how much mail they process)...their mail decreases over that time. Many there have wondered if trucks are being kept on the road longer carrying bulk mail or are parked somewhere for a few weeks until the count is over. I would imagine that contract drivers don't know what they are carrying but if they are doing this to postal workers it would be a good thing to report to their union.

I read my friend the post where a trucker hates the mail man because he didn't deliver his parcels and had miss-delivered mail while on the road and that holding the mail didn't work. My friend apologizes and states that it's against regulations to hold up the mail. Having a parcel you have to get out and deliver it...one way to have it tracked is to have some kind of scan placed on it ...My mail man and my friend are very good...but there's always some bad eggs. Unions are being broken up and given less power these days but it's unions that have given you what benefits you have..without that you'd probably have 16 year olds driving most of the loads for less money...anyway...keep an eye out if you can for stalled out semi's full of mail or mail being re-routed around the country with balk mail...The count started today and ends in 2 weeks...My friend isn't saying it happens ... he just doesn't know?

I moved into an apartment complex that had cluster mailboxes . Parcels were supposed to be placed in a large box at the bottom and the key left in the regular box . I came home once and found a parcel that had been placed behind the storm door of my apartment 3 days before I got home .
