I used on of these round discs once, and to my horror my fifth wheel got completely shiny and looked like it was almost ruined. Maybe that’s normal, but it sure looked bad to me. I’ve since heard your supposed to get all the grease off trailer and fifth wheel to use one, although plenty of guys say it doesn’t matter. What am I doing wrong, or is it normal to look that way?

What's wrong with it being shiny? A pic of your top plate would help. Yes, you need the mating surfaces clear of any grease.

Flat Earth Trucker Thanks this. -
Works for me. You can make it work for you.
WD-40 and PB Blaster are also good in a pinch. -
I’ve always used the same grease the rest of the truck gets.

If you’re running a disc and your 5th wheel gets shiny that’s fine. It’s also doesn’t matter if there’s a little grease on it either. I run a no lube top plate on my 5th wheel and we drop and hook a lot, so I always end up with grease on the Teflon pads. The main thing is if you do get grease on it make sure the grease doesn’t have any rocks or grit mixed in with it, that’s what will ruin your Teflon plate.
