That's garbage pay for your area. I was making just as much working in Montana where the cost of living is 2/3 of where you are at.
With that said, here are some things to consider:
P&D runs 5 days a week. Off weekends and the major holidays. It pays OT after 8 hours. You may have a guaranteed start time, or they may screw you and play phone tag.
Linehaul pays milage. You also receive hourly pay for non driving stuff. Beakdown, dockwork, and waiting is paid hourly in 15 minute increments. Things like chaining, hooking sets, breaking sets and fueling is paid flat rate hourly (usually 15-45 minutes depending on task). You do not receive OT. You will probably run overnight. Some barns run daytime routes but this is strictly seniority based. Most of our runs were home terminal to turn point then back. You may do a layover run in which case they put you into a hotel. For our barn, layover runs were about 5%.
The biggest perk is your healthcare benefits. Even the most disgruntled employee will admit that they are some of the best in the industry. They dock you $50/month and you get a plan that is worth about $12-$15 an hour. This plan covers you and your family.
If you are in a union barn, the $50 a month is paid for you by Reddaway but you will end up with $50/month in Union dues. So no matter how you look at it, it evens each other out wether union or not.
Hope this info helps .Last edited: Oct 11, 2018

I tried the outher ltls but they didn't need anyone or wouldnt train,I did get a offer to haul Waulmart trailers for Swift,I have been spraying weeds on the railroad tracks for a railroad vegetation management company using a 5000 gallon tanker truck,I could go back to that ,it pays 22 a hour but requires dodging scales when the truck is loaded,I thought the pay was low

If you don't like it at the end, you walk away with a Class A. They don't require a year of servitude in exchange for the training.rabbiporkchop Thanks this. -
I have my class A license already,i just do not have the experience hauling trailers

My buddy just got on with Shamrock Foods in that area. Said it’s one of the easiest Foodservice gigs. It’s physical labor but easier then a lot of Foodservice jobs. They do restaurant chains only. They run a electric pallet jack and lift gate. Scoop the stuff off the pallet. They are hurting. Drivers average 90k there. Home daily, work 4 days a week. Guys that work 5 make 100k. Get your experience there and then go to LTL. I’m sure they’ll train.

I have applied to Shamrock foods before but never heard back from them,
