A senior line haul driver (top guy or close to it) was using his phone while driving. A Wally World driver took a picture of him and ratted him out.
Ironic how the Wally World driver had to use his phone to do this(!)
OD management fired the driver on the spot. No write up, no suspension. And to salt the wound, they posted his photo where other drivers can see it.
All the years this guy put into the company and this is how they treat him?
Again, it bears repeating this can be a trucking urban legend. But the drivers who told me this story were from the same yard.
If any OD guys out from Fontana can confirm or refute this, feel free.
EDIT:
To clarify, the driver was using his phone without a headset. I realize this is a big no-no but a write-up and suspension without pay is something I would've done. This way, you send a clear message and not permanently lose a good loyal driver. And to post his photo to further humiliate him just shows how petty and vindictive OD management can be, in my eyes.Last edited: Apr 1, 2017
MACK E-6 Thanks this. -
The way i read that translates as the job can be done in five hours but if we let you come in 2 hours early you will take seven hours. -
I go in early in mondays, with hopes of actually getting done and getting off at a decent time for once. Seldom does that work out that way though. Too many lazy guys don't want to do their own pickups. -
It is not uncommon for corporate to replace safety managers. Usually when there is a new sheriff in town, the first thing they do is try to make a name for themselves. They do this by making an example out of someone. Not saying this is what happened in your case about the guy on the phone, but it is something new safety guys would gladly use.
It used to be that if you got a preventable accident, and the damage didn't meet or exceed $500, they would not even use it against you. Hell, they would even let you keep your monthly safety bonus. Guys would sideswipe handrails all the time there located near one of our docks. They'd just have a welder out on Monday to make it straight again. No big deal.
Along comes YRC and they change everything. They changed it to any accident that generates any damage for any dollar amount will be on your record. And that my friend is how lost half a dozen drivers that had 18+ years with the company from our barn alone.
One guy got written up for hitting a overhead door that came down on his forklift. Wasn't even his fault, the spring gave out and it just flopped down on him. Then another snapped an airline, he was fired. Then another dude sideswiped a utility pole. He could have gotten away with it cause there was only minor damage. His convictions made him fess up.... Guess what, also GONE.
This all happened about four years ago and we kinda laxed down a bit since we can't find anyone to drive for us anymore. But you get the idea.
Driver facing cameras is just a matter of time where they will be inside of more trucks than not. Then after some point (unless self driving trucks replace us all together) will the FMCSA probably make them mandatory across the board anyway.
Keep looking around. There are really good LTL companies out there. But usually the really good ones rarely hire.X-Country and Bob Dobalina Thank this. -
On a good route, I can get almost five stops done per hour. That last Tuesday I had to average just over six stops and hour just to get done. I did have a return that I was cut off from.
Either way, it was stressful as hell. But as usual, do more with less in less time. Looks good when profits are going up each year.
One more reason why I miss linehaul. Those guys always sit fat and happy. You can only fit so much freight into a trailer, and you can only pull so many trailers. There really isn't the stress of peddling freight. You just hook and go. Nobody calls or messes with you.X-Country and Bob Dobalina Thank this. -

Good input from everyone - which I appreciate. Now I have a better why idea why USF was advertising like crazy.
As for driver-facing cameras becoming mandatory for all trucks...I'm not so sure about that. This technology is still relatively new. The megas and all other bottom feeders haven't looked at every possible ramifications. No one can.
If, in some ironic twist of fate and karma, the driver-facing cameras are successfully used against the trucking companies, they'll circle the wagons and have private meetings with the legislators. Money buys politicians and politicians make the laws. And...voila - these intrusive devices will NOT be federally mandated.Last edited: Apr 1, 2017
Big Don, Bob Dobalina and road_runner Thank this. -
And I am just speculating with the cameras. They are just becoming more and more common since I got into the industry. I've been wrong before though.
