I posted this over in the Werner section, but later thought I'd get more responses here since there are more O/O here. I was looking at a couple of used 379's my local dealer got in and found out they are ex Werner trucks. Here is what I found out on one of them. It's an '06 379 with C15@435/1750 with a 13spd and 418k. I ran the engine number through Cat and there were only a couplle of minor claims on the engine: one for an oil leak and one for an oil line. The dealer was closed, but the truck was unlocked so I climbed in to see how the trans shifted, it moved through the gears really smooth without any binding, clutch also felt good. So my questions are:
1. is the engine able to be turned up by a simple ecm flash to 475-500hp
2. Will any Cat service center be able to deactivated any of the "nanny" programs that most of these company trucks have? I know Werner has a idle timer and speed is governed to I believe 65.
3. I've heard that the low mileage Werner trucks that are for sale are wreaked trucks, any truth to this and if so,would a 5yr old truck with 418k be one of these trucks?
4. How is Werners maintinance program?
5. Should I just run away since it's one of their trucks?
The dealer that has the truck has it done up really nice with eight new virgin drives, freshly polished wheel/tanks, and all new brakes. The only downside is the paint is a little faded and I can still make out the Werner graphics on the side, and the top of the hood is a little oxidized.
Used Werner truck- buy or run away?

What are they asking for it?

they're good trucks but if it's mechanically fit i wouldn't worry but, however i would check if it had history of major cosmetic damage/ frame damage. my dad had drove an ex werner 02 century (detroit 60 w/super 10) and the cab had a very visible lean to one side and did not sit even on the frame, but everything was working like its suppose to. i think they need to cut the price in half tho, that is too high regardless if its a pete or shaker

well sounds like a good truck in your case, if you are really interested in it, i would start knocking the price down, i saw ex werner shakers on tp with a half mil. miles running condition for $30k you should be able to pick up a pete in that condition for around that price, but seems like the other $30k is just the name.

I was talking with my local cat dealer when they ran the overhead about ecm flashing. The manager told me that from corporate orders they can no longer set the governed speed any higher on road trucks than 70 mph due to liability. Not that I would ever trust them to mess with my ecm we were just talking...

Jay klinker Thanks this.

I kinda figured this truck would be exempt from the wreaked/rebuilt group but just wanted to make sure. I actually have enough to pay for the truck, but will probably put it on a three year loan so as not to deplete my excess funds just in case I would run into problems. If there is no big problems after a year I will probably pay the truck off.
I know alot of people that run Cat's and they all say to be prepaired to do an OH around 700-800k. I'm still looking for a lower mileage truck to show up, but finding one spec'd like I want and pre DPF is getting harder. -
I have never rebuilt a cat with less than a million miles on it. I bought this truck I am in now with 465000 on it and I dropped a reman engine it at 1.3 million.
I guess it is just how you take care of it and if you get a good one . I must be real lucky I haven't got a bad one in the last 30 years !Jay klinker and azcardnlz Thank this.
