So, a US Xpress recruiter came to my school today. We got the usual smooth talking sales pitch that we have been receiving from most of the recruiters who have been coming by. (Let me add that this forum has been invaluable to me as I am evaluating potential employers.) Recruiters tend to quickly skim over areas where they know their company is weaker than the competition. Often you can learn more by what they don't say than by what they do say.
Anyway, at the end of the presentation he hadn't mentioned tuition reimbursement, so I asked. He said oh yes, we pay $150 per month for up to 30 or 36 months (I forget which). Then he passed out brochures right before he left.
I got a little bored later today riding down the highway with 4 students and an instructor in the truck so I started reading the brochure.
Now I'm not sure if I completely understood what I think I read, but in the fine print at the bottom it said that new hires who opt to receive tuition reimbursement get 33 cents per mile instead of 35 cents. A little bit of qucik mental math and I realize that the break even point for this is a mere 7500 miles per month. Of course, you know he said we would get way more miles than that.(2250 -2500 miles per week)
So the bottom line for this is if you drive more than 7500 miles per month, not only are you not gaining a darn thing but you are actually losing money by accepting tuition reimbursement. I understand that there is some tax benefit to having tuition reimbursement come off your check pre-tax but PLEASE! You've got to be kidding me! It seems to me they are preying on the stupid.
Can someone tell me, is this really their policy? Or am I not understanding this correctly?

Personally, I would not even look at that company. There are better starter companies.

Oh, believe me, I won't be going to ANY of the "starter" companies. I am just passing along some information that I figured out. This can't possibly be correct, can it?

Don't buy into their tuition reimbursement it's not what it seems. They actually give less than what they tell you and when they do give it to you you will be held to much shorter runs then those who haven't opted in, therefore resulting in even less pay. Those that I talked to while I drove for them that opted in said they averaged just about 2000 miles a week, at the time I was getting 2500-2800 a week. Don't take up their offer of per diem either it'll screw you too. Per diem at any company is a bad idea.
