there are two ways to get from utah and az. 89 or 89A. no other route unless you want to get WAY out of route.

i take the 89a all the time. and yes.

the sign also says 89 is closed, use 89a as a detour. and it only adds about 20 miles and probably close to an extra half hour.

don't worry about it and just drive it. i live in salt lake city, and deliver to phoenix or back to salt lake ALL THE TIME.

heck, i've even taken the 89a then over to the polygamous towns and up through cedar city. if i don't want to hit that kanab utah scale.

and as far as this topock scale. never heard of it. and topock is 384 miles from page.

don't know anything about these restrictions others talked about in arizona. but trucks are on that road ALL THE TIME.

basically, youi've spend 2 hours researching a road and another hour talking about it over nothing. LOL.
and there's only ONE switchback curve.

if you want to get paranoid about a road. then study the 550 on the southern end of colorado into new mexiczo. THAT'S a road i wouldn't think trucks would be allowed on.

Cant say much for grades and such, but 550 doesnt look too bad. Just followed it from Durango to Albuquerque, and only at the end does it get windy....other than that, looks like a nice scenic route. Again, all I could see was the curves, not the elevations and grades. :)

I've taken it before and its not to bad....i wouldnt do it in winter tho....its not easiest or best road but all was fine with a 53' trl...it is tight curves narrow lanes, decent grades but very pretty and isolated country and scenery...and if i remeber right...i dont think too many services....good luck....ummmm...i cant remeber the utah hwy i took...but there is a huge grade like 9% from the 15 to the alt 89.....but your light...and hillsdale and colorado city(morman fundamentalist towns on ut az border)...ohhh boy...you just have to see it for your self!

US550 along the "Million Dollar Highway" stretch is restricted to trucks picking or delivering along the route. If you're a through truck you probably will be fine, unless you get a ticket, accident, etc.

Most western states have a restriction against 53' trailers. Doesn't mean they'll ticket you for it, but that doesn't mean they won't either. So, with a 53' it's best to stay on the highlighted STAA routes in your atlas.
