I think as long as they have they have the physical and mental capacity to do the job safely and efficiently i say let them do the job.

I'm not certain a physical tells the real story.
I don't think a mandatory drive test would be out of line for folks over 80.
I'm not talking about nit picky stuff, or reciting the pre-trip, but just to make sure the reflexes and attention span is there.dwells40, runningman0661, HoundDog7 and 6 others Thank this. -
Sounds like some young drivers can’t handle seeing an old hand cruising past them with a 18 speed manual and chewing on a toothpick doing a coast to coast run in three days!?

I'm 77 and could easily drive a CMV, however, I will admit I'm extra careful when driving my personal vehicle, plus I wouldn't want to deal with all the trivial stuff trucks have to.

As long as they have a physical, they are fine. A lot of our guys drive until they cannot pass the exam anymore (well into their 70s and even 80s), then hang up the reigns.
At current time, I believe our oldest driver is 79 and still works 3 days per week, part-time. Its good for him to get out of the house. Meanwhile, we had a 77-year-old fail his DOT in May and hang it up. His son arrived at the yard to clean out his truck before the sun went down that day.The_vett, dwells40, JolliRoger and 1 other person Thank this. -
Have a coworker that's 72, he plans to work till he's 74, he's probably more spry that a few of us younger drivers, but at the same time you can see how a long day wears on him

According to ABC 7 News, 83-year-old truck driver, Bernard Sneller, slammed into the back of another semi truck as it was stopped at a red light in a construction zone. The second truck was then shoved into a pickup also stopped at the red light.
One dead, six injured in red-light wreck between two semi trucks (cdllife.com)
Personally, I don't know what the cut off should be, but 83 is too muchOLDSKOOLERnWV, runningman0661 and JolliRoger Thank this. -
Kind of a tough question. There are 85 year olds with less health/heart attack/stroke risk than some much younger people on the road.
Average life expectancy for a truck driver is 61, so the odds aren’t in the favor of an 80 year old driver. But then again, the odds of a 40-year experienced driver getting into a wreck at 80 is much lower than the 1 year experience 35 year old.
I think some extra cognitive tests and a slightly more thorough physical past 65 is fair, but too much variation between people to put a maximum ageJolliRoger, gentleroger and bzinger Thank this. -
Have a gentleman here driving full time local/regional 6 days a week... Hes 83. Probably one of the best drivers we have. Definetally the mist attentive to his truck and any issues that may arise. But he's is also allowed time off when ever he feels the need, even if its getting off early or refusing a load.
