First posting here, nice to meet you all.
I have had my Class B CDL (Passenger/Tanker/Hazmat) for about 25 years, so when checking on what it took to upgrade recently, I was surprised with what all has changed ... and wondered if anyone could offer advice.
I called a local truck driving school and told them I knew I needed to take the combination portion (at ALEA) and redo road test and pre trip on a tractor trailer rig (per what ALEA told me). I asked what they might charge to let me practice the actual test there. They basically told me that ALEA does not do road tests anymore, and that they have to be done at a school, and that the school has to put you through the whole course. He did say I wouldn't have to go through all the other portions, but that the tuition would still be the same (3 grand). Obviously, things have changed since I got my CDL - where all I had to do was read all the material, test, and do pre trip and road test on a Class B CMV - but paying 3 grand to get OK-ed to upgrade from B to A seems overkill to me. Does anyone have anything to offer?? Thanks in advance!

You should not be paying 3,000 to upgrade. Go to your local DMV ask you want to upgrade from CLASS B to CLASS A ,
They should give you a permit test , after this you should sign up for school for some training, and get road test schedule -

Also check to see if there’s any grant money out there that you might be able to qualify for

3 grand.
That's 2 weeks pay for a class A driver.
Worth every penny.
Just pay it and get it done.
It's not a hundred grand in the hole for
Some type of degree. -
He has a "O" restriction. That is commonly referred to as O NO. You have to do everything over using a semi with a fifth wheel if that is the restriction you want to remove.
You can get a Class A with a pickup and a gooseneck (hotshot) but you will still end up with the O restriction.
Just do the class. Call CASE CDL in Missouri and see what they are offering right now. Typically will cost around $1000.
