Truck came with a rtlo 16918b
About to pull the trans and do a clutch. While the trans is out, i will be upgrading Trans. For a Genuine Eaton remanufacture RTLO 18918b with core the price is 5300 bucks from peterbilt. Any reason not to jump up to a 20918b? IS there a big price difference or is there such thing as too much transmission? IS the shifting a little more notchier with stronger gears? All the rtlo 18's are a DIRECT SWAP. So just curious.
i plan on upgrading to a c15 in the next 2 years just fyi and my truck is a sever duty construction vehicle and always in soft material. What clutch do you recommend as well.
Thank you for your time and i truly appreciate any insight you good people have.

Honestly if the trans works fine and not wore out with lots miles just leave it.
You'd be surprised how tuff a 16 series trans is. There really isnt a while lot diffrence in gears or parts between the 16/18/20/22 series 13 or 18 speed transmissions. More to do with oiling and gear hardening then anything.
Look at the spec sheet some time and look at the wieght diffrence between a RTLO16918 and RTLO 22918. There is none. All of them are 716lbs.
When it's time for a clutch all I ever run are 2050ftlb genuine Eaton easy pedal. Never a issueLast edited: Aug 31, 2019

Also about the easy pedal eaton. SChool me on it. Im trying to figure how a easy pedal could stand up to severe duty. One would think you would need a heavy clutch that requires 2 legs to press her in

Well if it makes you feel better putting a fresh trans in then go for it, especially if you think the one you have has issues. Nothing wrong with a eaton reman!!
The eaton easy pedal is a stout clutch.
It is just the way its designed that makes the pedal effort less. The clutch will handle your abuse just fine.Diesel Dave and Dino soar Thank this. -

From what I have been told the 16 series and 18 series 18spds, are basically and mos rebuilders upgrades the 16 series cores to 18's .

I just put a 2050 in mine. Very nice clutch. Pedal is easy!!! Better than the last ones I’ve had. Improved strap design, Clutch, disk, and intermediate plate, goes on all one, 2 nd disc is the only other part to install. It’s smooth and quiet. You’ll like it.part # 308925-25

I noticed my cross shafts are all loose in the bores. So ill probably need a bunch of things when i tackle this job.
So much to do when i drop the trans. I know the flywheel is warped so ill have to get a new one of those. Obviously do the main seal even though its not leaking,
rear motor mounts. anything else i can easily get to. This is why im doing myself. Shops do stuff half assed and milk the labor. I enjoy big jobs and take my time and dont cut corners. Quality workRideandrepair Thanks this. -
Clutch and install kit, about $1000. Also did rear main, re sealed rear structure, new flywheel, motor mounts, oil pan gasket, and used one piece reamless cross shaft bushings, along with new shafts. I had a lot of play before. Now none, The fork fits much better on the new clutch. Old one was real sloppy. It was a huge very intimidating job for Me, one I never want to do again!! Installing clutch itself is the easy part. It’s all the other things involved. Simple Instructions in box, Eaton videos, and Detroit manual. And especially a whole lot of help from @BoxCarKidd, Thankfully, He was amazing, Got Me through quite a few jams.A wealth of knowledge. I tried to do everything by the book. Except installed the clutch on trans first. Torqued through acess hole. Glad I took that advice. Did the job on gravel. 2 pc 1/2” plywoood, with a piece of sheet metal on top. Had wife in the pick up on speaker phone. Lol. Surprisingly It worked great. Lined up almost perfectly, Only had to adjust it clockwise about 1/2”inch or so to line up bolts.
