I've been thinking about the unusual truck stop/business combos I've seen on the road.
I've driven by the JRS Travel Center at 1901 E Reno in Oklahoma City for years. I always thought it was unusual that it had an Indian restaurant and that they featured that on billboards I had seen in OKC.
This weekend we had a hankering for some spicy food and were surprised to find the restaurant well reviewed on UrbanSpoon.com. We saw comments such as 'best Indian food I ever had' and 'better than food I had in India' so we gave it a go.
It's located across for the Petro which is located at 20 Martin Luther King in OKC. You've probably seen it if you pass through OKC. Half of the JRS Travel Center is just like any truck stop you see in any other locale while the other half is an Indian grocery with a restaurant. I was surprised by how big the grocery business is. They obviously serve a large part of the Indian community in OKC. The restaurant is nothing fancy, but the food is awesome. They have a lunch buffet during the week and combination meals at other times. We'll be back. If you don't like the food, there's a Waffle House right next door.
After our visit, it go me wondering to other unusual truck stop/business combinations out there. I remember a Mom & Pop truck stop in the deep south that I saw that was a combination truck stop and sporting goods store.
What have you seen?

It's long gone, but the old Hawkeye truckstop in Iowa City was half truckstop and half Harley dealership, always liked stopping there to drool on the bikes!
I can't remember where the truckstop in Kansas in that has a bunch of old Triumphs on display, but I don't think they were for sale. -
I was outside Ocala, FL, and out of hours on a fumbled Target load.
Ran down to the nearest truckstop called "Forks". It was a fuel shop with a small deli that served burgers and biscuits. However, the odd part was that they also operated a small tanning salon tucked into the back of the building. -
Stopped at Russells in NM Tuesday. They have alot of old cars on display. Mile marker 369 on I 40.

Wondering if they had a side business (cathouse, massage parlor?) -
Small tanning salon ? Tucked away in the back ? Did they have a sign saying "Me love you a long time " hanging out front ?

I was learning the accent at the time, so picking up subtleties was beyond me.
I still don't know what a babby is, or why the barefoot locals used it so much in conversation. -
