Went to get some quotes for insurance just a bit ago.

OOIDA offers "Unladen Liability" insurance. That is something new to me. As leased to a carrier, is this something that is necessary for the O/O to purchase? Or is deadheading or doing any kind of business related work while you're empty covered by the carrier's general/trucking liability?

    Thanks.

OOIDA quoted me on all of non-trucking, bobtail, AND unladen, all 3 of them. The unladen part was $8xx, and the non-trucking and bobtail combined together was the same cost as the unladen.

short answer is yes. your lease will tell you just how much you must have (most are $1,000,000 ) you can get it thru the company your are leased to (they take it out each week/month) or you can get it on your own. i have mine thru True North, it was cheaper than thru the company and OOIDA

I had to look that up. Insurance code, or laywer speak for bobtail insurance?
What difference does it make if you are hooked to a trailer? Like you have to have insurance on the tractor, and the trailer isn't going to cause an accident without the truck.

Because, you're more likely to be involved in a collision in the first place when pulling a trailer vs bobtailing.

Bobtail and Non-trucking should be fine for an owner op who uses the vehicle occasionally for personal use while off duty/not dispatched. Just don't get anywhere near a trailer while you're doing that.

You won't need all of those. Only 1 as a rule, just depends on who you lease to. For example, Landstar requires Unladen Lia and will not accept OOIDA insurance. Other carriers only require Bobtail Liability. If possible, you need to decide on a carrier before you purchase Ins.

You're going to want "comp" (comprehensive) coverage also to cover theft/vandalism/acts of god while the truck is sitting unattended. I think animal strikes are also covered under comp as act of God.
