Went to get some quotes for insurance just a bit ago.
OOIDA offers "Unladen Liability" insurance. That is something new to me. As leased to a carrier, is this something that is necessary for the O/O to purchase? Or is deadheading or doing any kind of business related work while you're empty covered by the carrier's general/trucking liability?
Thanks.

It should be spelled out in your lease agreement, but generally you are only covered by the carrier's insurance when you are "under dispatch." Driving to a mechanic or to a walmart for groceries may not be covered.
Unladen & bobtail insurance fill in the holes (some insurance companies use "unladen" "non trucking" and "bobtail" interchangeably, but they are slightly different. See: http://ezinearticles.com/?Owner-Ope...n-Liability-Definitions-and-Impact&id=4848891 )Last edited: Nov 7, 2016

OOIDA quoted me on all of non-trucking, bobtail, AND unladen, all 3 of them. The unladen part was $8xx, and the non-trucking and bobtail combined together was the same cost as the unladen.

Bobtail and Non-trucking should be fine for an owner op who uses the vehicle occasionally for personal use while off duty/not dispatched. Just don't get anywhere near a trailer while you're doing that. -
BoyWander Thanks this.

You're going to want "comp" (comprehensive) coverage also to cover theft/vandalism/acts of god while the truck is sitting unattended. I think animal strikes are also covered under comp as act of God.
BoyWander Thanks this.
