I never really fooled with unit numbers because we only have one truck and trailer but when I was doing my IRP paperwork I had to list a unit number for the truck are just used the last four of the VIN for the unit number.
My question is does this number have to be posted on the truck somewhere to be legal ?

No, it does not.

Well maybe it depends on the state, but yes in most cases at least, a truck needs a unit number. Even if it is 1. Like I said it may depend on the state but I thought it was national.

I use number 1 on whatever truck I drive . easy to remember.

Seems to me there is supposed to be a unit number on registration so that the 'powers that be' can tell if the truck or trailer is actually registered. It's not Kool to be driving unit#21 and get caught with registration for unit#37
blairandgretchen and Rock 'n Roll Relocater Thank this. -
Never had that problem yet but I generally stay in state or with 300 miles of home.
I only use one truck and change when one is down.Rock 'n Roll Relocater Thanks this. -
As far as I know, the only requirement is that you have a unique identifier for both log book and your maintenance file. That can be a plate number, unit number, vin...

My question would be, why do some companies have truck and trailer numbers in the millions when they only have a few thousand trucks or trailers? Like my company for example, I drive for PTL, Paschall Truck Lines out of Murray KY, my current truck number is 21092. And I know they're a fairly big company but I know for a fact they haven't had 20,000 trucks in their fleet. Or take like the trailer numbers. Idk how far they go back when PTL started, but I know as of now the oldest still in operation is 530,000s. Many of these 53s are in service but they're trying to retire them out. But the trailer numbers are now up to 2,200,000. And I know for a fact they have never had 2 million trailers in service. Their website even tells you;
OUR STATS: 85 Years in Business.
1,100+ Tractors. 3,000+ Trailers..
. So again my question is Why do some companies number their units so high when they've never had that number of units in their fleet?Last edited: Aug 31, 2022

If you are going over private scales while loading /unloading you need a number to store tare weights as well
We just use the year of the truck
