UP itself only hauls freight on trains. Outside carriers pick up and deliver the "cans" that come off the trains. Go park by the intermodal gate and get the company names off the doors of the trucks running in and out the intermodal yards. Give them a call.

I'm gonna be honest. If you have a CDL, you might have a decent chance of getting on with a track gang driving one of their work trucks but in most cases local doesn't exist. Railroads work by seniority and you can look forward to being furloughed a lot within your first couple of years till you gain seniority and you'll start working closer to home. Railroads are very difficult to get on with and it almost takes an act of congress to get hired. I know a guy that spent almost 10 years trying to get hired on before he was finally excepted. Its not easy then you have to consider if you do get hired that you won't have a choice but to join the union as it isn't up for debate nor is it an option. I started to apply for KCS before I started driving truck being the train nut that I am, they don't want guys like that and the requirements are killer. Just letting you know ahead of time what you will be facing so don't hold your breath on it and be sure to have some work to fall back on. Even with contractor rail companies for maintenance and repairs can be a cumbersome process because they have to abid by all the same training, rules, regulations and knowledge and have to meet and comply with all railroad safety protocols and regulations. Just giving you a heads up.
