I have a 2000 International 9400 and have been struggling recently unhooking the trailer. It has a sliding 5th whee. I have a KW T600 that gives me no trouble. I unlock the 5th wheel and put the landing gear down. Do you try and take pressure off the latch by backing up ?? How about dumping the air ?? I'm getting old and not as strong as I use to be !!!!!

I usually lock the trailer brakes first, then put the truck in reverse to take pressure off the jaws. I'd unlock the 5th wheel, pull forward a few inches, then dump the air bags before pulling completely out.

usually I dolly down, then dump the air bags and pull the 5th wheel release while they are dumping

if its hard to pull after trying all the above it is possible the 5th wheel needs rebuilt or has a broken spring making it hard to release

Those pesky fifth wheels can be bothersome sometimes. Are you pulling a spread axle trailer? Are you on level ground? Sometimes on dirt/gravel, the trailer is tweeked a bit and can be a pain to pull that pin. I seem to remember on a spread axle trailer, when you unhook the airlines, the trailer will "walk" forward a bit, which would put a bind on the kingpin. It's been 10 years since I pulled a spread, so, I may be a little hazy in my brain activation skills today. Also, if you "dolly down" too much, you will raise the trailer up too much and put a bind on the kingpin. Helpful hints submitted by Allow Me.

My KW T600 is like that but its tough getting any leverage to do the "up" part .... I'll try all of these suggestions and if nothing works, I'll have to look into repairing the 5th wheel.
