Alright, time to clear up the horror stories on this engine.
    1) NOT made for light hauls. If you use your brain, you'd notice it pulls better with 45k or more.
    2) It IS NOT a high RPM engine. Read the manual, its not like a CAT where it can handle a heavy foot.
    3) A lighter engine, notice how compact it is.
    4) DOES NOT, I repeat, DOES NOT, like running hot. If the temp goes above 200, use the FAN OVERRIDE. It will also give an extra boost in pull.
    5) Automatic Regen at 68mph or more. That's with a 10 speed, a 13 speed should Regen at idle.
    6) REQUIRES frequent oil checks and fuel filters.
    8) DO NOT, treat this engine like it can run forever without having 30 minutes to cool off after a LONG day. Maybe go inside, eat, shut it off.
    9) Let the check engine light stop blinking BEFORE turning it over. Put the key in the 3 o'clock, let the check engine stop blinking. Turn it over, or else it can't test all the sensors and can result in PERMANENT engine damage.
    10) This engine can endure a very heavy accel, this doesn't mean you can put it on the floor to take off. It can only take so much.

Navistar had to make this engine standard because CAT stoped making Cummins stopped supplying, and Detroit never made one to fit the mounts, I don't think.

There, giving Navistar's engine a good rep based on owning a truck with it.

Why would the transmission type have anything at all to do with the regen? If the final output ratios are the same, a 13 speed and a 10 speed could have the exact same rpm at any speed in top gear. Does not make a bit of sense to me.

Cat quit making engines because it could not make the 2010 EPA standards. Detroit stopped supplying engines to everyone that was not part of the Freightliner/MB corporation. Navistar chose to drop Cummins because they did not want to offer a urea DEF treatment engine in competition with it's own super EGR engine, which they never were able to get to pass the most recent standards, and now have decided to use DEF, and are soon going to offer Cummins engines again. This was done to save the brand of truck!

Actually, NAVISTAR had a marketing plan to take the large truck market by storm with the MAXFORCE. They spent major advertising dollars touting the benifits no DEF. It didn't work out for them.Their stock has lost over half it's value in the last year, the president was fired and replaced, the company has lost millions and millions on MAXFORCE warranty work, and their market share is rapidly declining. They have had to announce that a new and improved MAXFORCE is in the works. I know people that are doing just fine with their trucks, and putting up with the idiosyncrasies. However, this engine wil very soon be history, and in the category of "major business failure."

RPM's, the plug needs to get a certain temperature to Regen. A 10 speed at 68 would get tht plug hot enough, a 13 speed would keep the RPM's down going that speed. Meaning a 13 speed needs to be allowed to go faster, but when a truck is in a 75mph zone... they have a truck speed posted.
