I'm new to the trucking world and am currently in school. The question that I have is whether or not, once I become a company driver, if I should purchase an Umbrella Insurance Policy to cover my ### in the case of an accident?
I know that as a company driver, my company has the liability of their employees, but I also know that people in the world are greedy and if my company doesn't give them what they want, I don't want to lose everything I own.
I'm just curious if any other drivers have this, do I need this, or should I not worry about it at all and know that I'll be covered by my company if the #### hits the fan.
Any and all information is appreciated and thanks in advance.

Well if you're not hauling umbrellas, why would you want umbrella insurance?
TallJoe and kemosabi49 Thank this. -
think, you are walking on ice, slip and while doing that you knock over a woman who breaks her hip.
She sues you.
an umbrella is a good thing here -
Well, I suspect that if they find out you have a special liability coverage, she will certainly haul you into court or litigation. Otherwise, how much can they really expect to get out of a poor truck driver?

Umbrellas are pretty cheap. If it breaks I’d just buy a new one

You ask a good question. I can see both sides to having the umbrella policy. Without one, and assuming you are not reckless and the 4-wheeler is trying to convert their inattention into a payday, your umbrella policy might make you a target. That policy is a juicy prize to go after. As a likely broke employee of a "mega rich" company with commercial-level insurance & assets the driver is included just to be able to target the trucking company.
I'd be interested to hear if the typical umbrella policy would cover a driver acting in a commercial/professional capacity or if you'd need a more expensive commercial umbrella policy.
It's a good question. I suspect the answer is to be found from insurance people not us drivers. -
