Met a driver at a fuel stop the other day. He was an owner op with a Cascadia. His two hood mirrors had something I didn't recognize so I asked him. He said they emit a high pitch sound to scare away deer. The device he uses looks built in to the mirror body.

Is there a detachable option for company drivers? I checked Amazon and couldn't find anything.

    Thanks!

25 years ago you could buy them deer whistles anywhere and everywhere.

It's a waste of money they do nothing to tell deer to move out of your way.

Google deer whistle and there are many places that sell them.

Also, they don't cause the deer to run away. They startle a typically skittish creature causing panic and random running. They could run away or into your truck in their headlong flight.
Without one they tend to stay on the side of the road eating grass.

    Yeah they are great.

I've got a long time trucking friend who after having 20 years being on the road and never hitting an animal, was given a couple sets of them by his insurance agent, he put one set on and hit a deer who was standing in a field on the side of the road and just bolted across the road. He got his truck repaired, put the other set on and he was driving on i75 in Kentucky and had a flock of deer fly out in front of him and he took out three of them. He got his truck repaired and didn't put the things on then after another 8 years, he retired with 3 million miles under his belt and not hitting another animal.

With or without them, it's a crapshoot when it comes to hitting deer. One place I worked had them on all of the trucks and we hit plenty each year. I've hit deer multiple times without them. It's going to happen regardless, might as well not spend extra money towards it.

They have never prevented deer from running in front of me. I've probably pegged 3 deer while using those.

They don't work on drunk drivers either ... I pegged a drunk driver in Texas in March '97 while driving a Greyhound with a deer whistle. He was as dead as any deer I ever hit.

What's the deal? They only cross where the signs are. Just be careful around the DEER XING signs.

    Next question!
