More curiosity than an actual earnest move across the pond, but...

I have a brother that lives in Ireland and recently, out of curiosity I started looking into commerical driving in Ireland, UK, etc. Stunned really at how terrible the advertised pay is for most of these positions. Just wondering why the pay is so low across the way?

I've worked for a handful of class a companies here in the states. Mostly local and/or LTL work. The pay for most was around $60-$65k. Just moved back to LPG gas that requires a class B and I'm on schedule to make around $70-$75k over the next calendar year. Most truck/lorry jobs in the UK and Ireland are advertised at around $30k a year, give or take $5k?! Are those real salary numbers? That's terrible if so. Why such a low salary there? That's around the same pay there for both a truck driver and a propane job similar to what I'm doing now. Salaries across the board for all professions can't be at 50% discount in the UK as opposed the the USA? Why are commercial drivers paid so poorly there?

Is the cost of living that much difference?

Ads were in pounds. Most listed salary ranges between £21k - £35k. I admittedly only googled the conversion and think it was around £1.18 = $1.00 from my first google hit. Close enough to a 1 to 1 ratio when estimating and such. That still puts annual salary at around $25k - $40k. I don't know the job specifics over there, but assuming it's a ~40 hour work week, the top end of that range is only around $19/hr, low earners are just under $12/hr. By comparison, cashier's at some local gas stations near me make between $14 - $19/hr and obviously don't have the responsibility or risks of hauling freight or fuel.

As I understand it, as Eastern European nations joined the EU workers in those Eastern nations rushed into Western European countries for higher paying job (Ireland is still in the EU, while UK is not). I've heard the BBC and others refer to "the Polish Plumber" problem. Meaning those workers (plumber, truck driver, gardener, etc) will work for less than local workers, or workers from nearby EU countries. Think of how the home construction industry, in some people's mind, is now mostly Mexican. If your home region was poor enough, you can work for less than workers in a more expensive European country, and still make substantially more than you ever would have made back home.

I don't know what truck driving in Ireland used to pay, so I can't verify if pay has dropped because of the "Polish plumber" issue or if the job was as low paid as what you noticed.

Much higher then in the US. Housing especially. Health insurance is of course not as bad. A different way of life if you will.

There’s still plenty of good jobs over there. Just have to know where to look and sometimes who you know. Definitely have to get into the specialized lorry driving.
@tscottme is bang on. It was the influx of cheap labor from East Europe that sent a lot of good jobs to the dogs.

People choose what line of work they go into, and they know what it pays.

Funny thing when people start to demand more money for what they do.
It increases the cost of doing business.
That drives up prices for anything related to what they are doing.

And since the cost increases result in both a trickle down and trickle up effect, the net gain is always less than zero for those on the bottom or middle end.

I get paid in Euros for where I work now.
It's dropped a good 20% sitting in my Paypal.

Should take note of how strong the dollar is right now. I pretty much buy everything from China get it flown to my house.

Like seriously.....it's cheaper to get a pack of batteries flown in (for free via the ccp subsidized shipping) from yiwu in two days to my door than it is go down the street and buy them there.
And I'm talking cents on the dollar....

No shot I'm purchasing anything in a tual America right now. Can get the same exact thing via proton VPN purchase.
