I might be jumping the gun here a bit, but is it possible to get a TWIC card prior to getting a CDL? Or, at least get the process going? I've read up on the official website, but also looking for input from drivers...

    thanks!

You can get a TWIC card w/o a CDL. Port workers have them.

Thanks for the answers, guys. Appreciate it.

I still wonder though, that without a CDL, and without a port worker ID, what I might need to apply. It is, after all, a "Transportation Worker" card, and I don't qualify as that just yet.

I'm just thinking that it would be a good thing to already have when looking into potential employers...

Anyone already have a TWIC and have advise/stories to offer?
Would I be wasting my time on this?

Got mine at a regional office, definitely not at a port. And there was a port nearby.Go online to htt://twicinformation.tsa.dhs.gov phone 1-866-347-8942 and they will give all the locations you can go to. No you do'nt have to have a cdl, good luck.

Do you live near a port? Where are you planning on working? I see no reason to get one unless you plan on working for a carrier that loads/delivers to ports. As a company driver, unless the company you sign on with requires you to get the card (and pays for it), I wouldnt do it. Does not pay enough for the hassle, most companies you will not get extra pay for port delivery... I have spent as little as 20 min to get loaded/unloaded (flatbed)to an all day experience.

In my opinion a hazmat endorsement opens up alot more doors than a TWIC card. The TSA background check is the same, once you get it for hazmat you will be not be charged for the check again if you decide to get a TWIC, and your TWIC should be issued faster not needing to go through the background check (of course the same goes if you get the twic before hazmat endorsement)

Thanks for that response. You make a couple of good points; first that the background check is easier if coupled with another endorsement like hazmat, and second that the TWIC fee is a bit less ($105 vs $135) and would be covered by the company if required for the job.

Yea, might as well wait until I need it and let the company pay for it.

    Thanks guys!
