Smart move. When I pulled a reefer, my buddies said I was foolish getting hazmat. Well, a load of paint was offered to the company, going from the East Coast to CA, & I got the load because I was the only driver with hazmat. When the company sold out and many jumped ship, I had tanker/hazmat/TWIC and went right to work for a tanker/hazmat company making $15K more per year. The other drivers weren't so fortunate. That's a personal choice I made & it paid off.

Actually, I know for a fact refineries require them to enter. Had that issue with Dupree in south Louisiana a few years ago. They frown upon not having one but you can wait and be escorted in and out but like I said, they don't like it. If a container ship is being loaded with crude from trucks then the chances are yes you will have to have one. Its not worth the hassle in my opinion plus I don't like the fact of having a white card (or any other for that matter) in my wallet that contains a microchip that can be tracked by the government. Just something else for them to make more money off of.

[h=1]Transportation Worker Identification Credential AKA Twic Card[/h]http://www.tsa.gov/stakeholders/transportation-worker-identification-credential-twic%C2%AE

Most companies want you to have it. TSA will do a back ground check on you & if you have no criminal history they will issue your card for $125 and i think it is good for 2 years.you can use your twick to go secure areas such as Ports ,some military bases, chemical plants and high security zones most of them require you to have your twinkie card for more info follow the link above.

Just got mine and its good for five years. My understanding is that some companies are requiring it even if you don't go near a port, and the thinking is that the companies just kind of use the card as a way double-checking on your background. A lot of company websites I have looked at say "Must have TWIC Card, or the ability to get one," or something similar.

I don't plan on working in port, but got it anyway. For me the $130 (actually $129.50) cost was nominal, but YMMV.

Also, the same background check for TWIC is the one used for HazMat.

Don't know about the chip-tracking thing. Guess I'll just wrap tin foil around mine or something.

I figure that if they are going to attack it will be through my cell phone, probably when I'm playing Candy Crush or something, so I'm not too worried about my TWIC Card. :D

I have hazmat endorsement, have always figured I would get a TWIC card at some point, but have never needed it. I've picked up and delivered to Ports and Railheads (only occasionally), have never needed a TWIC yet, I'm wondering if you need a TWIC if you already have hazmat?

Yes, TWIC is an entry credential with security clearance.
HAZMAT is an endorsement to haul hazardous materials.

The only thing I've wondered about is why you would need a TWIC when the Hazmat background check is so much more stringent. If you already have that, I would think you would have a fast track to the TWIC card without too much time for the background check, plus, as I said, I have picked up and delivered at ports and railheads plenty of times and they never asked me for a TWIC card.

The airport I work at has guys drilling 12" holes in the sidewalk, putting in those 6" steel (Schedule ??) 3 foot pipes every 5 feet to stop vehicles from crashing into terminal.

It takes an hour to cut 1 hole...

must be about a hundred of them.

Something funny - I just found out today that my employer wants me to have a TWIC card. I agree with Sailorrick, though. It's odd to need a TWIC card on top of a HazMat since the same organization pulls records for both.

Well it's no big deal to get one. Just find an office. Go at 7 in the morning as a walk in. They like to make appointments but they're not busy when they open. They ask you a few innocuous questions and you get fingerprints. Hand over your debit card (they don't take cash or checks) then wait for a couple weeks. They say they will email when it's ready, but they won't, so just go back to the TSA site every few days and check on your status. Took me about 17 days.
