You can pull turnpike doubles on the interstate and city in Nevada and Utah. Sysco pulls them from Elko to Salt Lake City and back every night

Well, I dunno what to tell you. I pass double 53’s on the Mass Pike on a regular basis. Heading westbound, there’s the NY Thruway...and east bound, they’ve come off the NY thruway.
As a matter of fact, I spoke with a driver pulling a set of said doubles at the truck stop off Rte 22 in Canaan last summer.Last edited: Dec 22, 2018

You met him at a truck Stop? Sorry, not buying it, they are not legal off the turnpike
Woodys Thanks this. -
Loves, off exit B3, which if my map reading skills are correct, is Rte 22.
I was pulled into the fuel island, fueling up, next to a set of double 53’s and talked with the driver of the rig, as I was curious what the deal with them was, and the 90 corridor is the only place I see them.
I’m a local driver, so...see these rigs pretty much every night I’m running out there.
Shrug. -
Oh, and the most common big no-no is to take a big truck on a parkway or other restricted roadway, hit a bridge or something. They'll tack the overlength ticket onto your already bad day, but they haven't stopped me for going down to Wall St. or Times Square.Dan.S Thanks this. -
I run most nights in NYC, with a 48.
I didn’t realize it was an issue - there are enough 53s going in and out of there... -
From what I've heard to pull two full size tandems you have to have 5 years experience in NY and was about .60/mile with pay for every drop and hook of a trailer/dolly. I think that could add up pretty quick

I know they run double 48fts on the florida turnpike usually going between Orlando and Miami. Use to run linehaul that had 3 drivers pulling double 48fts from Miami to Orlando and back at night time. They had a habit of 'forgetting' to break the set on the turnpike and would instead run the doubles 5 miles down the highway to the terminal. Then one night I was pulling my single into the terminal and saw 2 of the 3 drivers pulled over by state cops on the highway off the turnpike. The 3rd driver had made it to the terminal a little bit before they did so he was safe. I never heard how much that ticket was for them, but they always remembered to break the sets on the turnpike after that lol.

different states different rules. I remember 53' doubles on turnpikes (Ok.) as well as Ma. and NY thruway. But here's the scoop......it's length limit that's allowed or not allowed. As an example, 105' in Nv. and Or./Wa. So TWO 53' ers won't work in these states. The double 53' ers probably work with a day cab or very short wheel base power unit. I also remember a pull-off area where the driver could break his set to go into town. I can't quote the rules in each state, but I'm sure certain rules apply for turnpikes etc. I believe I-80 between Wendover, Ut. and SLC is it for over 105'. But could be wrong.
When I lived in Id. we had 105' length limit, so we had long trailer and a long draw bar pup trailer.
