I'm developing something that will help drivers analyze a turn digitally before they have to actually make the turn. In researching the various models of tractor units out there, couldn't find any published data on turning radius. I'm trying to get a general idea of what this could be for a tractor unit, without any trailer attached, so we can test this. Any input on what a general range would be on turning radius for something like the Volvo VNL series, Peterbilt 579/589/389, or similar long haul / regional model would be helpful.

I know the steering turn angle can be in the neighborhood of 40-50 degrees, just trying to get a better handle on turning radius. Thanks for your input.

Talk to the manufacturer, they have engineers who just work on steering systems.

If I may. Please don't introduce any thing new to the trucking compaines. Send it to the drivers directly. The last thing we need is auto correct going thru a curve at speed while loaded.
    Other than that good luck.

My Classic takes 8 lanes to make a u turn. By far the worst turning radius of any factory built Truck.

While I appreciate you effort, this is one of those things that a driver learns about a truck they spend time in... It's part of their muscle memory in short order.

Designers of areas trucks need to access could use something like this, though.

Every truck turns different, kind of hard to narrow it down

I make mine as wide as possible or will do a 3 point turn in a back corner to not scrub tires and destroy suspension pieces

I pace it. Sounds dumb but works incredibly well to know if I can fit or not. Like I know my truck is 33 paces long and to turn comfortably with my spread axle trailer I want at least 45 paces.

Every new truck we've ever bought needed the steering stops adjusted. They always came from the factory set way too wide hence the "40 acres to turn this rig around" syndrome. The dealership wouldn't change the factory setting so we did it ourselves. Five minute job.
