2012 int maxxforce 10
Recently have a high pitch whistle( not the sound from the turbo winding) coming from engine under acceleration.
Dealer is suggesting replacing some intake hoses and cac pipes as there might be a pinhole leak somewhere.
Is this the best way to go?
What does a faulty turbo air control valve sound like?
I remember international having trouble with their connection for the turbo air control valve. The began to hard wire it because it was not making a good connection due to wind and vibration under the hood. (Crap design)
Turbo had a history of coking however they said it was fine upon last inspection. Truck is still burning a gallon over 10k miles. Crank case ventilation tube was updated with open type.
At first I thought it was gunk oil building up in turbo from previous coking however this was not the cause of the whistle/wine
Turbo air control valve connection or cac line leak?

A boost leak will cause turbo coking. What kind of truck? Workstar or durastar? Best thing for the dealer to do is to psi test cac and piping together, before just replacing.
flood Thanks this. -
Dealer's love to throw YOUR money at it.. make them show you pin hole... If they can have them smoke test the system.... That's the best way to find it

Noise could be boost pressure leaking through an air to air hose or clamp. Could also be exhaust leak. Those engines are really bad for the exhaust manifold leaking at #6 or 5. If there is an exhaust leak the whole back area of the engine will be black with soot stains everywhere. They use a really over complicated method to control the turbo waste gate, if this is what you are talking about. They have a small tube from the intake pipe at the inlet to intake manifold that goes to a boost control solenoid. This tube will carry boost pressure from the intake pipe. When the ECM wants to lower boost it will open that boost control solenoid which will allow the boost pressure in that small tube to continue to the waste gate actuator that opens an actual waste gate valve in the turbo. If that tube is split or broken I guess it is possible to produce a whistle noise. They are only cheap plastic, so it is easy for them to break.
