Hey guys. I need some advice from those of you based in NY who have gotten their Double/Triple endorsement recently.

I passed my written knowledge test for Double/Triples, Metal Coil, and Passenger and wanted them amended to my CDL A, which already has Tanker. The guy at the window tells me that the Double/triple will come as a permit and I need to take a road test pulling doubles to get the full endorsement on my license. I'm like, what the ####... but the guy tells me thats how it is.

So right after the transaction is complete, I call the DMV number and ask them if its true... they say yes it is. I call three different times and ask them where I can find this information for this endorsement as I've looked up and down the NY CDL manual and DMV website to no avail. They can't point me to any specifics, just that it is "in the CDL manual somewhere." Thats a direct quote.

The third time they connect me to a supervisor who starts off with "All CDL A holders already have doubles..." Dude was confusing double with combination, and then ignoring the fact that I was also saying triple I guess. After explaining to him that I mean't pulling double/triple trailers, he says NY doesn't do triples. Then we go back to "Yes you have to take a road test in a double, no I have no idea where this info came from or where you can find it."

I'm not against taking another road test in a double if I have to, but nobody knows what the DMV is talking about. Not any of the local CDL schools, not anybody I know with a D/T endorsement. Im just so lost on what I need to do to get this endorsement on my CDL, wtf.

Try a different DMV office. Go to one far away from the one you used.
Doubles/Triples is one endorsement and the DMV should know that.

I think this is what I'm going to try that and see what happens. I was half and half on whether I did need a road test or not, but that changed quickly when the supervisor needed a five minute explanation on what I meant by Double/Triples. Also the guy that connected me to the supervisor said that he had a little card that said something along the lines of "Get 16 out of 20 question right on the test, amend to CDL." Like that is exactly what I'm looking for, but he still couldn't confirm it. God ######.

I wouldn't say anything at a different DMV office about what happened at the one you went to. None of their business anyway.

The endorsement is actually "T" (for triples) but obviously is good for doubles.

Being New York I’m wondering if they’re confusing pulling long doubles on the Thruway with the T endorsement on the CDL. Guys that pull long doubles on the New York thruway and Massachusetts Pike as well as long doubles and triples on theOhio and Indiana toll road do indeed have an extra permit to run them.

    There’s a metal coil endorsement?

Yeah. Coils that weigh over 5,000lbs, be it a single coil or multiple coils all together weighing 5k, require a metal coil endorsment. Actually one of the harder endorsement tests I've taken.

When I was training for flatbed with Welfare Express, our class took the Alabama coil test in order to be company certified to haul coils.

We were told that there was a New York coil test which was effectively the same thing. Neither were an endorsement on your license, but merely a certificate.
