Hi guys. Currently I live in Atlanta and would like to have your opinion on where is the best cdl training in the state. Somebody told me that all community colleges provide superior training compared to the private schools. Is that true? The only problem here is that usually college programs require 10 weeks vs 3-4.5 weeks at the private schools. And my employer can give me up to 4 weeks paid vacation which is perfect. If I decide to go to community college I need to combine it with my full time job and that is not fun. So I am a little bit confused.

Check with the local community colleges - I believe some of them are offering night and weekend training programs. I attended North Metro Tech and I know their programs are daytime only, but they did say some of the other schools offered alternatives. The full time program is 8 weeks - not sure how long it would take if you were doing it part time. Good luck!

North Metro Tech is Chatahochee Tech, right? I was thinking about them as well
, but If they have only daytime is going to be difficult. And I work in the retail grocery store right now and never have weekends off and sometimes I work early mornings, second shift or even night time. If it's part time they can give me only second shifts and that means that I need to be out of class no later than 1 pm and to run for work after that. Not too many options I guess. And the part-time will take at least 12 weeks probably in this case. Maybe at the end I'll go for a private school.

I starting Daly's in Buford on the 25th. After you get your CDL then the real training begins with who ever you go to work for. Don't see any reason to spend any more time than needed getting the CDL.

The last I heard, the cost without the HOPE grant is going to be in the $1200 area. If you qualify for the grant, the cost drops to $700. The required books add about another $100 to the cost and HOPE may pay some portion of that.
The program is 7 1/2 weeks long and will be approx 2 weeks in the classroom, then about a week on the range and the remaining 4 weeks or so on the road. When I went there, the hours were 8AM to 3PM while you were in the classroom, then once you hit the range and the road they split the class in half - half were there from 7AM to 1PM and the other half was there from 1PM to 7PM.
But like I said, everything has been changing since the state has cut the HOPE grants, so if you are interested, call the school or better yet, take a drive up there and meet the instructors and check out the facility. Good luck!
