I am looking into maybe going to Diesel Truck Driver Training School in Sun Prairie, WI. I called them and they quoted me 3300.00 for a two week training course to get my Class A CDL.
I already have my Class B, and Class A Permit and DOT done. I don't want to be tied to a company for 6 months to a year in order to get free training. Does anyone know about this school? Or is there any advice out there that you could give for someone starting out?

Price seems high unless lodging is included. You should be able to find a 3 week course in Ill or Wisc for 2k. You might look into Millis or Roehl. Both offer training with minimal up front cost. Both do require a commitment though.

Fox Valley Tech in Appleton is by far the best school I have ever worked with... Sun Prairie was always a scam and will probably always be a scam..

For those in the area and still interested in Trucking schools. I looked into all schools in the area and decided to go to Gateway Tech College in Kenosha, WI. Taught by Eagle Training out of Illinois. In my research I heard nothing but good things about the school and so far the training has be top notch!

If you don't mind, what's the cost at Gateway Tech and how long is the program?
-
It is not the cheapest at 3950 but even the local community college is 3K up here. If you are unemployed the state will pay for training.
-
Oh, and the class is 5 weeks long.
-
You'd be surprised how $3950 is a good price...some people on this forum mention programs in excess of $8000. Let us know how you do!?

I didn't know Gateway Tech had a CDL program. The 4 tech colleges I know of in WI that do are Fox Valley, Chippewa Valley, Waukesha Technical college and Milwaukee area tech college. Those 4 programs are 10 weeks long, cost is just under $3,000 and you need to get your own housing. They are also highly regarded for their training.
There's a private school just across the Illinois border near Rockford called Spirit CDL school. There was a poster here a few years ago (Zen Trucker) that went there and had good things to say about it. That one's 4 or 5 weeks long and around $4000 last I knew.
To anyone thinking about Diesel Driver Training in Sun Prairie you may want to rethink that. I have not heard anything good about that place yet. High priced, very little training and crappy equipment. I stopped there once long ago and the trucks & trailers looked like junk. The guy I talked to was a legend in his own mind and an obvious super trucker. That was a huge turn off. It seemed he was interested in telling trucker stories instead of answering questions. -
The length of class time is why I chose Gateway/Eagle training. Half the time. Student teacher ratios are low as well. It was hard not to go to WCTC as it is less than 5 minutes from my house but the 10 weeks with out a paycheck was a huge factor.
