I just wanted to make sure the 30 question hazmat test on TheTruckersReport site was correct. Or maybe the answers are different between states?

One of the questions at this link here states that there are "31 DOT specification placards.
However, the 2013 California CDL handbook on page 112 says that "there are 22". I don't have a copy of the 2014 if there even is one. Have here been more placards added in 2014? I would think that these numbers are standard across state lines?

Subscribing to this thread, I hope some of our hazmat experts will provide clarification. The test database is going to be updated next week, and if this question needs to be fixed I'll be glad to get it taken care of.

Just wanted to add that this page shows well over 22 and these are US only placards, which makes me think that it's somewhere around the 30, or 31 as TheTruckersReport states. However most US driving laws originate from the California standards and their book says 22. What's tricky is that the book mentions that these are DOT specification placards. The fact that they mention DOT specification makes me think that there's a distinction between placards that are not DOT. How one would differentiate between the two (if there's a such thing as none Dot placards) is confusing because there's no mention of it in my book.

Note: I found another one of the test questions on the smaller 10 question Hazmat quiz to be wrong.

Question 4: A driver who hauls hazardous materials must attend training every____years. I said 3, the test marked it wrong and said it was 2 years.

Please see page 109 (Top right of page) second paragraph down:

    http://apps.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/comlhdbk/comlhdbk.pdf

Although this is a California study handbook, I found many of the codes in the Illinois CDL book are the same as California CFR codes.

    directly from the Federal DOT....
    RECURRENT TRAINING
Employees must receive the required training every three years or any time there is a change in job function.

In my years of taking the actual tests, I have never been asked how many placards there are...

Most driving laws originate from federal standards. DOT specific means they comply with the specifications of the regulations. eg. Must be at least 9.84" on each side, must have a solid line border, numbers and letters must be at least 1.6" in height, must past a 30 day weather exposure, etc. Most placards you'll see little lettering in a corner that they are DOT compliant. You can't make your own. Shippers are responsible to supply you with placards but there are them rare occasions you might have to buy one. Most hazmat companies in the business have permanent flip placards on the trailer.

    It is 3 years.

It's good you are trying to learn everything you can about hazmat. But there is a lot to absorb and you will learn as you go on many things over the years. I'm still learning. Keep your hazmat bible with you and don't be scared to ask questions with the shipper or even your safety director. Many companies will call you and go over the load with you to make sure you are compliant. Hazmat fines are not cheap.

For testing purposes concentrate on the end of chapter questions in your drivers manual. You will see many of them again. Try not to read between the lines. The number of placards is not a test question.

    Here's you 128 placards. :)

Here is your problem: you are reading from a book of that states standards which are going to be different from federal law.

Thanks, guys. Already have that fixed in the database, it just needs to be uploaded along with the new software. The old database also has an outdated question about SHIP, which has been changed to ISHP in the coming database upload.

Thanks to everyone for their input.

    EDIT:
Sorry to bring up a third issue now, but there is another misleading question/answer with the TTR test.
The test says that you must have a UL rating of 10 B:C for Fire Extinguishers. However, this is only the minimal for the power unit. If you're driving a tank or combination of tank vehicles used to transport flammable's or combustible liquids, you must have no less then a 20 B:C. The test should draw a distinction as a 10 B:C would not apply to both circumstances.
See page 124 lower right here

Note: I think this is a California specific law because of the fire hazards in the state. Not sure.

I wanted to say how much I appreciate you guys taking the time putting up these practice test questions. They are extremely helpful!
It would be interesting if any of the actual questions from various DMV's ever get sheared with the public, or even leaked from time to time. Although I know they change the questions from time to time, it would be cool to get our hands on actual copy's.

As CondoCruiser's mantioned: Most of the examples in the CA commercial study book I'm using make "specific" reference to CFR sources. CFR = Code of Federal Regulations

By the way, nice find .. on them 128 placards CondoCruiser.
Makes me want to decorate the outside of the house to keep Door-To-Door Sales/Solicitors away.
