    Hello fellow truckers!

I was a local trucker for 14 years. Now I am a writer, public speaker and traveling sales man. I was thinking that cross country trucking can be lonely at times driving all those miles by yourself with nobody else to talk too. Then I thought - what about a trucker ride share board! A place that truckers and people who need rides could connect and help each other out. It could be incorporated right on this forum.

The trucker would benefit from having someone to talk during parts of his trip and the person riding could offer a few bucks to help with gas, expenses or offer some service or product in exchange. New friendships would be established connecting people across the country. We all need help in these economic times and money is not always the easiest way we can help someone. We must find other ways that we can help each other as a national community, bring us together in closer understanding.

If this sounds like something YOU would be interested in we could discuss it further. I belong to a worldwide organization called couchsurfing
which is a hospitality site where people can arrange to stay with other members during there travels. Truckers could take advantage of this great web service! It would give them an opportunity to meet and stay with different people all over the country instead of just sleeping in your truck or in a motel you could have a meal and some great conversation and a unique experience!

I will be traveling across country myself backpacking it, couchsurfing, ride sharing etc starting Dec 1st. My journey will be three months long and it will it be blogged daily and made into a book after mentioning everyone I connected along the way. I would like to ride with some truckers on my journey. If you are interesting in joining me during my trip or rather me joining you then feel free to contact me through this site.

    happy travels!
    Chuck

Well, the only thing I can say is, No can do. Against company policy to have riders, period no exceptions. I can't even take my wife, so I'm surely not going to take a stranger.

Exactly the problem with this idea. Most of the trucking company's will not allow any passengers. Roll through a scalehouse and don't have the authorization from your company you will get fined and loose your job. Otherwise good hitch hiker ride board idea...

Company policy: family members only. And only with previous authorization.

No authorization? 392.60 of the federal regs, NO unauthorized person to be transported.

Gives little meaning to owner operator don't you think. If you own your rig you should be able to have whoever you want ride in it, as long as they are not in the back with the cargo which is someone Else's property. It is like your home is it not? I would not like someone telling me I could not have anyone in my home.

Well I guess that is the way it will be until truckers decide to change it by not accepting it. Maybe the union can support you in someway so as to make a change. Like anything, if your willing to accept it there it will be in your reality.

So CharlesIS, when I stop for the night in Duck's Butt, Wyoming where is my "travelling companion" going for the night. Surely you don't think I'm sharing my crib with some travelling encyclopedia salesman!

Liability is the problem. Say the truck gets into an accident and the rider gets hurt. Who's going to pay for his medical?
