i have a 98 W900L and pull a bull rack , this may be a dumb question but why is the width from outer most piont to outer most piont of the tire 97 inches ? with trailer width of 102 and stability an issue with these things (and many other trailer types ) why is the axel width so much narrower on the tractor (or is it just the KWs , i've had a 96 and an 02? the trailer axels look to be wider than the trucks though i haven't measured them they look to be close to 102.

Most tractors are going to have a 96" width. They don't know where you will be operating or what you will be pulling. Many states used to (and a few still do) have a 96" width limit once you get off the national network of designated truck routes. By making the tractor 96" wide, it will be legal to drive on any road.

Trailers are another animal. If the trailer body is 96" wide, it will have 96" wide axles. If the trailer body is 102" wide, it will have 102" wide axles. If you have a 102" wide trailer, you can't drive on roads restricted to 96" wide. If you have a 96" wide trailer, you don't have to worry about the width restriction.
