I will be camping my way across the northwest of the country this summer, from Chicago to Seattle and back, and most of the places I will be staying in will be fairly primitive, with no running water or flush toilets, and especially no showers. And so, to avoid getting too rank, I was planning on showering every now and again at a truck stop. The problem is that I have no idea how that works. Is there a special area to go to? How much will it cost? Should I bring shower shoes? Is shampoo and soap provided (like at a hotel) or do I need to bring my own?
Any advice you have would be greatly appreciated.

Just go up to the desk and ask for a shower. Usually around $11.00. There are towels and soap in the shower. No shampoo. Shower shoes do not protect you from anything. If you have open sores on your feet you should not be in any shower except your own.
Most drivers, if you ask will give you a free shower off their truck stop card. Most have more then they can use at any given time.Dave_in_AZ, AM14, HotH2o and 1 other person Thank this. -

Shower shoes/sandals are a must. Towels are provided but you may want to bring your own depending on how particular you are about a decent towel. Seeing how you're going to be roughing it wit no running water, you probably don't care about how big or fluffy your towel is. Bring soap and shampoo with you, because they are ridiculously expensive to buy at a truck stop. As @Skate-Board said, just ask if anyone has a shower credit they can spare. Why spend money when most of us always have extra. Once someone redeems a shower for you, you will get a shower customer #, and a slip with a PIN code on it. Then you just wait to hear what shower you were assigned to, punch in the PIN and go about your business. That's how it works at the big chain truck stops at least. Most stops have laundry facilities as well. Have fun on your trip.

Can help you locate truck stops along your trip
I would bring my own towel and wash cloth, flip flops and soap and shampoo
You can also use laundry machines, normally about $2.50 per wash and $2.50 per dryerDave_in_AZ Thanks this. -
TruckerPath app for any smartphone... Shows truckstops, Walmarts, nearby restaurants, and mileage to all of the above.. Pretty sure you can click for directions, and then switch to walking directions once you're in your map app.
Also, download the Wish app, and search for a solar charger. I think I paid less than $15 for mine, and it has a carabiner clip that hooks to my assault pack, so I never have a dead battery in the field.Dave_in_AZ Thanks this. -
We all have more showers than we can use. Just hang by the truckers side of the pilot and ask.
Dave_in_AZ and flood Thank this. -
If I give you a shower, please do not destroy the F shower, since it was used under my name.
Please don't wash your feet in the sink.
I have yet to find a truck stop anywhere that carries dental floss, and you don't wanna buy anything there, except corndogs, anyway cause its 3 to 5 times what you will pay at wal mart.

Just don't look like a homeless guy because drivers will alert store employees that someone is begging for money on their property. -
I work with a guy that can find a cheap shower anywhere. He has shared some of his wisdom with me. Alot of times I don't shut down where there are large truck stops. End up parking at a gas station or grain elevator. Public swimming pools in rural areas are cheaper than the truck stop showers. Just pay to swim and use the shower. Campgrounds will often let you take a shower for a price even if your not staying there. I go to one that charges 4 dollars. I park on the street and walk in. Also look at the rural towns that have public beaches. Alot of them have changing rooms with showers.
Get of the interstates and you'll be fine.
