Truck stop motels? When do drivers ever stay at motels?

Some time ago, I wrote an article (http://bit.ly/daystop) about about Daystops, a former sub-brand of Days Inns. Nearly every Daystop I ever encountered was a tiny 20 or 30-room motel tucked behind a TA location. To me, this strategy didn't seem to make sense—for either TA or Days Inns.

With nearly every OTR driver having a sleeper, I can't imagine either owner/operators or company drivers spending $50-60 on a motel room. Coping with the costs of diesel and living on the road would be enough of a struggle. On the other hand, I can't imagine that families or business travelers would really want to stay at a truck stop.

Perhaps during unexpected repairs or a long layover you might be persuaded to rent a room. But in that case, would the fact that the TA motel is associated with Days Inn (or Knights Inn or another chain for that matter) make it any more attractive than an unbranded "TA Motel"?

So when do drivers ever stay at truck stop motels, anyway? Have you personally stayed at one?

There may be a few truckers without APU's or clean idle certification that would get a hotel room in states with idle restrictions .

some companies rent a room for their drivers, some of those company drivers share that room, some don't, they tend to drive day cabs.

there's a few truck stops that do or have serviced travelers in entertainment on tour, or so they boast with pictures on the wall..

I rent one myself here and there. but not at the TA

I have come across truck drivers who will get a motel room for several days, not only to sleep comfortably in a bed, but to wash all their laundry, totally clean out their trucks, do minor repairs and maintenance, and catch up on all their paperwork. Basically, the motels are excellent R & R places.

God bless every American and their families! God bless the U.S.A.!

Getting a motel/hotel room is a great way for a driver to break the monotony...whenever I would layover a weekend..I would get a room just so I could relax and enjoy the time...sometimes it's great to get out of the truck for a night or two.

For me it is cheaper and better for my body to buy the Motel/Hotel..It is only a few bucks more than idling the truck.

Last year i was at 1,500 for motel rooms and used them for write offs.It is amazing that it is almost as cheap to get a room than idle the truck these days.

    My benifits are pretty kool...

    1- pool
    2- sauna room
    3- jacuzzi
    4- free breakfast
    5- laundry
    6- nice warm bed
    7- work out room
    8- nice hot bath
    9- cable tv
    10- escort service....:biggrin_2559:...J/K
