Hey guys looking for people with more experience than me. I typically replace my shocks every year because at least half seem to be leaking their oil in that amount of time and I try to replace brakes and suspension in pairs. Every year seems a bit often to me for shocks? I always have bought Monroe mostly because that is what most parts shops I am familiar with have in stock. Is there a better brand or is the application just to tough on shocks to expect them to last more than one year? Thanks for any advice and suggestions.

I do shocks every 6 months, freightliner OEM is Sachs, made in mexico but german design. 100% oil, variable valving based on impact force. never tried any other brand just to save a couple hundred bucks, most other brands i looked at are gas shocks.

in 690k miles I've bottomed out the steer axle so many times on some of these construction road seams that are 5 inches tall at the bottom of a 70mph 5% grade going over a bridge brought to you by construction crew 0.5 BAC, never had one blow or leak. basically 1k for 2 steers 4 drives and 2 cab shocks. batteries and shocks are cheap cheap, I'll spend $$$ all day to keep stress off the important stuff

I remember a time when trucks didn't have shock absorbers. There was simply too much shock to absorb. I don't ever remember replacing shocks, or when a company did, it rode the same, rough as heck.

Man I was just hoping to hear there was shocks that last longer hahaha. I only truck about 100k miles a year. So once a year fix for me. If I did every 6 months like you it would be ahead of them spilling their oil out. I just did some digging and there is more expensive shocks to buy just not sure the juice is worth the squeeze. Wonder if anyone on here actually buys those? Monroe's are basically the cheapest option from what I see. Like ridiculously low, so maybe I shouldn't complain.

Hahaha yeah I have driven some old equipment with no shocks! Not across the country though. I am not looking to improve ride quality. I think my truck rides pretty decent, blown shocks or not. Just wondering if better quality shocks would be worth it for the money to prolong the life of more expensive items. Suspension, tires, mounts etc.

I just bought shocks for my 98 FLD. Sachs makes OEM for Freightliner but they were ridiculously priced even with my discount. So I bought Monroes again. Turns out I didn’t need them anyways. The ones on the truck aren’t leaking and work just the same as the ones in box. So on the shelf they went. I don’t drive a lot of miles but I do the oilfield so crappy roads and crappy railyards are my thing. Current ones are a year old this month.

Yeah, that dates me, where the spring ride didn't give much, the tires were the shock absorbers. Today, with modern air ride, good shocks are imperative, as they prevent "pogo-sticking". Unlike the old days, shocks take an awful beating, and a year is probably all you get. Like all this stuff, today, you get what you pay more. Spend a little more and get the best, original equipment if you can.

You could try Fox shocks they are good but they are pricey I run Monroe’s and get about 80-100k miles out of they are leaking I don’t know if the Fox Shock really last enough longer to warrant the extra cost they didn’t seem too for me

I was looking at the fox ones actually. I need to read up on them more. Not sure what the actual warranty information is. I also heard they are maybe rebuildable? Not sure what the cost involved with that is. If they are cheap to rebuild I would potentially be interested. I think one is 200 something bucks. So a little over double the initial investment.
