is my trucking school tax deductable? i paid for it 100% out of my pocket and i noticed on h&r block online there is an option for tuition but then i get a warning to be sure it is a qualifying institution. wtf? paying for trucking school or paying to go to a college in my mind is still paying to further ones education. what gives!!

is it tax deductible? absolutely. does it qualify for education tax CREDITS? not sure...probably not. for that, you have to go to a qualifying institution im sure.

I went to community college for my CDL and it did qualify for education tax credit. YMMV, consult a tax advisor........

right...any community college would qualify for education tax credits. they are all qualifying schools. i was thinking more of private trucking schools when i said probably not. but elendil is right...you should either read through the appropriate tax pages carefully yourself, or consult a tax advisor. it is FAIRLY self explanatory for someone who is motivated to do his/her own taxes, so anyone with proper motivation and an iq above 80 SHOULD be able to find all the info to do it themselves, assuming they are not involved in farming, clergy, or self employment. but it can be a time consuming process, so many will choose to give someone else their headaches. s'how block and hewitt stay in business when the majority in their employ have a few weeks training.

thank you, im surely capable of digging up the info on the tax. when i first read it i started getting a little warm under the collar so i figured it would be easier to ask the pros on this board! it was a small private school fwiw. some call me cheap but i live by the creed of why pay someone to do something that i can do myself so it looks like its time to brush up on my tax knowledge.....

i agree...actually worked for block for a few seasons. id recommend them to no one. same with hewitt. anything that 90% of them are capable of doing, is as easily done using turbo tax or the like. the problem will be if you MISS deductions to which you are entitled. but they can miss em too. i mentioned clergy and farmers because their returns are a bit more complicated. but im far from a genius, and i was able to do the return of a friend of mine who was both a pastor and owned a farm. took FOREVER, but she was gonna pay someone around $600 to get it done, so i offered to do it for $250. was worth it to me...i still made somewhere around 20 bucks an hour, and she saved a ton of money as well.

i didnt mean any disrespect in my answer...i only meant it as an encouragement to consider doing it yourself. it DOES take some digging around to make sure you get it done correctly, but all directions are intended to be easy enough for a high school graduate to follow them without any problem.

Your school needs a federal id Code and your schooling must improve training for your current job. ***not a new skill to start a new profession***

Sooo no don't write it off unless you want an audit.

Write off your days out plus 500 for new toys like a gps and you'll be left alone.

    He's already got his $2000 refund! :)

Trucking schools have to be accredited to be acknowledge as a secondary higher education learning institution. Some of them are not. They have to qualify for financial aid is the easy way to weed them out.
