I was wondering if anyone could tell me what app they use for GPS for driving directions. The maps on an Android phone will take you on every little side road and I downloaded smart truck route but it doesn't run unless you are in the app. Does anyone have any suggestions on a better map app for trucks. Thanks jn advance hope everyone that reads this stays warm

I bought a dedicated truck GPS; Garmin Dezel 770. I think they have a new one out now. It does a pretty good job for route planning as far as how long it will take me to get to my destination.

I also use google maps to get a satellite view of my pickup or delivery point. It’s useful to get a birds eye view of places I haven’t been to before.

Just remember that GPS is only a tool. Even the best ones can send you down the wrong path (pun intended).

Garmin and Rand McNally have good GPS devices, but nothing beats a good old-fashion Rand McNally road atlas for verifying your trip plan for low clearance, restricted truck routes, among other things. Google maps is cool, but it was not designed for big trucks. You must verify the Google maps route through an atlas.

Yeah I don’t use google maps for route planning, not designed for trucks. But it does show me stuff an atlas never would, such as the destination having 3 driveways and being able to see that you want nothing to do with the first two. Street view is sometimes useful when available.

Again, all of them are just tools in the tool box. Something a colleague once told me “you have to be at least 2% smarter than the tools you are using”

Smart truck route has run in the background on every phone I've had (all Samsung Galaxies). What kind of phone are you using.

I think some drivers use Copilot. I don't know if they use Android or iPhone. But Copilot, IIRC, is truck specific and puts the maps on your phone so you don't have to worry about losing cell service while navigating.

Personally, I would buy a used 5 inch Garmin 540 or Rand McNally 540 on a credit card instead of relying on my phone for truck GPS info. The 5 inch units are EVERY bit as good as 7 inch and about $150 less. The bigger screen just takes up more space.

The paper atlas is good for "big picture" but only OK at street-level info and only then for the biggest roads in the biggest cities. I don't leave home without my paper Atlas and my truck GPS (RM 740).
