So just to make sure I understand correctly, I don't need a data plan (I have one for the tablet, but concerned it may max out before each month is up) with CoPilot Truck? Any other tips or advice for CoPilot?

copilot only uses data if your using the traffic alert system.
but that don't matter what system you have. they all have to connect to something somehow. usually, the internet. -
Copilot also uses internet for search function.
iamchrisstone Thanks this. -
CoPilot (with no internet) gives you:
- Addresses, streets, and truck routing for North America using PC Miler routing engine
- Search points of interest
- Speed, direction, distance, time, etc
- up to 3 routes (primary and 2 alternates)
- ability to "drag the route"
CoPilot (with internet or cellular data connection) gives you IN addition to the above:
- Live traffic (if subscribed)
- Live weather
- Fuel prices (if subscribed)
- Expanded local search with sites like Yelp connected
- Facebook interface
- Twitter interface
Hope that clears it up some. The maps are loaded onto the device so no internet is needed for navigating. With internet, you can use some expanded "do-dad" features.bergy, Skydivedavec, iamchrisstone and 2 others Thank this. -

So it looks like when I begin my career with Carter Express, I'm going to use my Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 with CoPilot (and I have a data plan) and I am also about to buy a Rand McNally 720, plus a current road atlas. From reading these forums and talking to so many of you, this should be a great tool chest for directions and such, correct? Any other recommendations?

On your tablet, go to the Google Play Store (or iTunes store for Apple) and search "CoPilot" and buy the "USA Premium" version for $9.99. It will not contain the truck-routes or other truck-specific features as this one is for cars. But the interface is almost identical. In other words, you could take a look at how you put in addresses, how it looks going down the road, etc first for 10 bucks to decide if you like the basic way that it runs. If you go back later and buy the truck version, then you open the car one and click "change device" and then you could put that one on your phone or other tablet etc, for you. My wife uses the car one for going hiking in the woods here because there is no cell service in the sticks to use the Google nav. So she can navigate to the place and then record a trail in walking mode to follow back. Then switch back to car mode to get home. Neat app.Skydivedavec and iamchrisstone Thank this. -
dieselboss, when I'm not connected and I try to use search, it says "Unable to connect to the internet" so I'm thinking it needs internet for search, which makes sense to me.

if you need a backup. google nav works just fine. although you have to be on your toes a little.
rand uses staa routing. copilot will use any road a truck is legal on. AND is within the parameters you set. there wouldn't be any comparison for routing as they both will be different. rand will have more featueres. but everything rand can do, there's an app for that, on your phone. for free.Skydivedavec and iamchrisstone Thank this. -
I been running copilot on a spare android phone along with my rand mcnally 520. The copilot does a better job of getting me to the door than the 520.
iamchrisstone and Skydivedavec Thank this.
