There’s good and bad. I can tell you that your quality of life is much higher as an O/O. For what we haul $1200/week plus a small mileage bonus isn’t sufficient. There are other carriers that don’t ever touch hazmat paying as well or better and those drivers don’t have to sit up all night babysitting loads or deal with all the security at bases. The rates they negotiated with Clean Harbors are not very good and I hate that account. UPS loads don’t pay well either. I have to admit I have done quite well this summer but the last few loads have been so so with a lot of deadhead. I would recommend Tri-State for anyone wanting to enter the DOD market but you better be willing to deal with toxic waste and exhausting attendance requirements and running UPS loads non-stop in December through Wyoming.

I been driving since 1990 and me n the wife started here back in May, but this is by far the best company I have ever driven for, yes you could make more elsewhere but you will run your arse off, got the miles we run and the work we do I feel like I'm stealing sometimes, they are improving the lines of communication, buying new trucks and trailers, increasing pay, and working on 100% company paid medical and rumor has it might even be getting sattelite tv. Drivers are treated with a high level of respect and 2 days off for every week you are out ain't bad, so if you're tired of running hard and just want to sit back and take it easy, spend some time with your spouse or significant other and enjoy the sights then TSMT is a good fit.

Yes, totally feel the same way. They are truly an exceptional company. I’ve been doing work with them for 3 years now and can’t say enough good things about them. If you have any reservations, ask to talk to Mike Fisk who heads the recruiting Dept! If you need more from me, post here again. Happy to help!

Sounds like Whitline64 is a Tri state employee in the office. This co used to be called SLT, secured land Transport . They had a yard in Shawnee, Ok that they closed in 2014. Before that they were known as SLT, Salt lake transfer. Rumor I heard ( from an O/O that also gave the orientation in Shawnee ) was that this carrier had union drivers that sued the co and won a settlement, causing Salt lake transfer to morph into Secured Land Transport. One of the principles in the company is a former pro baseball player, or so we were told in orientation. In order to get milage pay along with the $157.00/ day you need to obtain your secret security clearance. This takes several weeks. I met with a woman twice that worked with the military doing background checks on drivers. Even though there was nothing major wrong with my criminal history ( a few misdemeanors when I was a kid ) I was denied my clearance and deemed useless to the co. I was abruptly terminated. I met several teams in my travels that worked for SLT. We all kept in touch, and within a few weeks of my termination several of these teams were also terminated. Rumors were the co was cutting costs by letting senior teams go because they were costing the company more than newbies and the fact is this company hauls mostly hazardous waste. You don't need a security clearance to haul hazmat. A trainer for the company that I knew had some health issues, diabetes and high blood pressure. After taking some time off for medical reasons he returned to training. They sent him for a random drug test and they said that he had cocaine in his urine. I knew this man. He was one of the nicest drivers I have ever met. I don't believe that with all the health problems he has that he would do cocaine. This company does not care about their drivers. They keep changing their name every time they get a bad rap. A rap they deserve. Do the research yourself. The office address is the same in Glendale, Az.

I’m always amused by some of the responses here regardless of subject. Sounds like sour grapes there “scrutinizer”. Let me be factual. Yes, SLT was years ago run by someone that was less than ethical. And the investors behind SLT took it over and turned it into a very high quality company. A few years later, they acquired Tri-State. Today, it’s one of the best run companies in trucking. Period. Forward thinking, progressive, financially strong and care more about their employees (all drivers included) than most companies I’ve ever seen. Great management (fun & experienced) and very engaging with their team at all levels. Compensation and benefits setting the pace in the industry. I have no bias as I am not an employee or a driver. I’m an entrepreneur that knows good companies and can only tell you they are a first-class organization. If ol’ “scrutinizer” was right about one thing.... it was his suggestion to “do your own homework”. When you do, you’ll find out for yourself what a world-class company they operate. Stay safe on the roads - even us non-trucking people appreciate all that you do.
